Monash College Unit Guide

CONTEXTS FOR ART & DESIGN (MCD1480)

Purpose

This unit is designed to equip students with a theoretical knowledge base of the contexts that inform Art & Design practice. Students will trace a linear time-line and the socio-geographic expansion of the modern subject and consider how contemporary cultural issues relate to historical platforms.

Prerequisites

Nil.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, learners will be able to:

  1. Employ a basic understanding of semiotics to describe works of art & design.
  2. Interpret how the politics of identity and difference determine the history of art & design practice.
  3. Identify how the history of philosophy and science is interrelated with the history of art & design practice.
  4. Relate how different forms of patronage have shaped the history of art & design practice.
  5. Distinguish between forms of patronage, modes of production and the methods of consumption.
  6. Discuss who the client is and what factors are making the client change.
  7. Specify contemporary art & design issues and be able to launch an opinion as to how they could be addressed.

Oral presentation - 10%
