COMMUNICATION AND PROFESSIONALISM IN HEALTH SCIENCES (MCD1600)
Purpose
This unit explores the systems, processes and standards that serve to promote and maintain a health science consumer’s best interests. Students investigate codes of practice and ethics, and the use of communication both individually and collectively in a diversity of settings. The impact of equity and social justice on the provision of health services is also identified.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
- describe the structure and function of the Australian health and social care system at a local, state and federal level.
- explain the different types of health professions involved in the Australian health and social care system.
- describe the obligations and the codes of conduct of the health and social care professions in Australia.
- explore the issues involved in dealing with individuals from other cultures.
- explore different types of communication available to health professionals.
- demonstrate awareness of different communications styles and an understanding of the strategies needed for communicating effectively in cross-cultural situations.
- consider professional issues involved in communication including privacy and confidentiality.
- identify workplace procedures and explore strategies to respond to problems of professional conduct and communication.
- develop practical skills in teamwork and communication.
