HEALTH AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT (MCD1670)
Purpose
This unit explores the interrelationship between health and social development of individuals. Comparisons are drawn between health and social status in developing and developed countries and reasons for the differences are provided. Health differences between population groups within Australia are also analysed.
This unit provides students with a foundation for understanding a range of strategies for optimising health and development, and examines the key elements of sustainable primary health care.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
- identify how health is measured and outline the major causes of morbidity, mortality and disability in developing countries.
- outline the interrelationship between health and development.
- compare and contrast factors that contribute to health status and development in developing and developed countries, and within population groups.
- describe the impact of globalisation on health and development in developing countries.
- demonstrate an understanding of the key elements of sustainable primary health care.
- evaluate strategies implemented to optimise health and development globally.
