MANAGEMENT 1: MANAGING PEOPLE AND ORGANISATIONS (MCD2040)

Purpose

This unit is designed to develop an understanding of how organisations are managed and to enable the application of analytical skills to a range of managerial and organisational issues.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Describe the evolution of management theory.
  2. Describe the management roles and functions.
  3. Analyse and assess the influence of the general external environment on an organisation.
  4. Identify the major elements of organisational culture in the workplace and how these impact on organisational outcomes.
  5. Apply the concepts of ethics and social responsibility to working in an organisation.
  6. Explore the key elements of planning and decision-making.
  7. Identify, generate, evaluate and select strategy alternatives for organisations.
  8. Explain the importance of organisational structure and design for organisations.
  9. Describe the importance of control in organisations.
  10. Discuss the nature of the employment relationship.
  11. Explain the relevance of leaders in organisations.
  12. Apply the theories of motivation to organisational contexts.
  13. Discuss how change needs to be managed in order to achieve organisational goals.
