INFORMATION SYSTEMS ANALYSIS (MCD3120)

Purpose

The unit covers the nature of information and its use in decision making; the processes of systems development and analysis of information systems primarily using object-oriented tools; some guidelines for good systems development. The detailed syllabus includes systems development methodologies and lifecycle, illustrated with case studies: planning and problem definition; evaluation and feasibility study; abstraction; quality and testing; project management. Analysis tools: information gathering, interview and questionnaire; organisation charts; use cases, class diagrams, documentation standards; data dictionary; prototyping; UML tools.

Learning outcomes

  1. Understand the nature of information and its use in decision making.
  2. Describe the processes of systems development and analysis for a range of information systems.
  3. Distinguish between structured and object-oriented systems development methodologies and their lifecycles.
  4. Undertake planning and problem definition in simple sample systems problems.
  5. Identify the processes and products for evaluating a system, and the feasibility study.
  6. Use object oriented techniques for modelling systems.
  7. Understand the nature and purpose of automated tools in systems modelling.
  8. Recognise the need for quality processes and testing.
  9. Describe the roles of IS professionals.
  10. Overview project management techniques.

Final examination: 60%
