Monash College Unit Guide
BASIC DESIGN STUDIO C (MCD5010)
Purpose
This unit provides a non-discipline specific theoretical and practical foundation for subsequent discipline specific design studios.
Prerequisites
Successful completion of Monash College Diploma of Art and Design Studies Part 1 or equivalent studies.
Learning outcomes
At the completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- understand the nature of the design process and apply methodical steps in their own projects;
- demonstrate the ability to recognize, analyse and apply the elements and principles of design in simplistic design projects and exercises;
- understand the multidisciplinary nature of many design activities;
- understand spatial structures in nature, built forms and visual systems;
- develop capabilities to communicate design outcomes, design concepts and solutions; and
- appreciate the relationship between design, industry and art.
Assessment
Skills and capabilities are assessed through a series of exercises worth 20%. Three projects examine the students’ theoretical understanding and awareness of issues, through the production of artefacts, reports and oral presentations, 80%.
