Monash College Unit Guide

DIGITAL IMAGING (MCD5030)

Purpose

To provide an introduction to digital media and processes for art and design activities.

Prerequisites

Successful completion of Monash College Diploma of Art and Design Studies Part 1 or equivalent studies.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. access College computing resources, including Internet and E-mail facilities;
  2. competently operate a personal computer, including operation system basics and file management;
  3. use a range of storage media and input devices, eg,, scanners, cameras;
  4. use image editing software to create, adapt, edit, manipulate and compose images;
  5. use output devices, eg. printers.
  6. Understand and be able to apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the unit of study.

Assessment

The unit will be assessed based on the production of a portfolio of creative work comprised of:

  • A series of exercises used to evaluate the students’ ability to comprehend, retain and apply knowledge as well as practice, develop and apply skills, (40%);
  • A creative art & design folio comprising responses to set projects (50%) that allow for greater personal expression and development than the minor exercises; and
  • A Diary/Journal (10%) that documents the student’s ongoing resourcing, development, exploration and understanding.
