Monash College Unit Guide
GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDIO (MCD5050)
Purpose
This unit introduces students to the basic skills, processes, materials and equipment necessary to the practice of graphic design, and image making.
Prerequisites
Successful completion of Trimester 3, Monash College Diploma of Art and Design Studies or equivalent studies
Learning outcomes
On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- understand the basics of the visual language of graphic design and the application of design elements and principles;
- understand the design process and the role of graphic design as a means of visual communication;
- approach the problem-solving of two-dimensional design with an inquiring, adventurous and open attitude;
- know the correct use of design illustration and typography materials, processes and technical equipment;
- continue to develop and apply the principles of form, shape and composition;
- be able to identify the appropriate application of illustration in the commercial environment;
- understand typographical terminology and understand the historical development of type;
- have the skills to create images at a basic level and utilise them within a design environment; andidentify appropriate research resources relevant to their study of design.
