Monash College Unit Guide
PHOTOMEDIA IMAGING 1 (MCD5060)
Purpose
To provide a foundation unit in Photomedia.
Prerequisites
Successful completion of Trimester 3, Monash College Diploma of Art and Design Studies or equivalent studies.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit, students will have:
- a basic practical and critical understanding of photography and its links with other media;
- a minimum level of competence and understanding of the operations associated with lens-based photography including the principles of photographic “seeing” and technical principles of image production (ie. use of light sensitive materials, exposure);
- a basic understanding of photography as a visual language through working with photographic imagery as expressive, narrative and representational forms;
- the foundation necessary to undertake further units in photomedia with a view towards either specialisation, integration or application of the media within other studio disciplines.
- Understand and be able to apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the unit of study.
Assessment
The unit will be assessed based on the production of a portfolio of creative work comprised of:
- A series of staff directed projects (30%) that place various demands upon the technical, expressive and conceptual skills of students;
- A self-directed thematic folio (50%), which targets specific individually-determined areas for study and exploration; and
- A Diary/Journal (20%) that documents the student’s ongoing development, exploration and understanding.
