TYPOGRAPHY 1 (MCD5070)

Purpose

Provides an introduction to typography suitable for further studies in visual communication and multimedia design.

Prerequisites

Successful completion of Trimester 3, Monash College Diploma of Art and Design Studies or equivalent studies.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. understand typographical terminology;
2. be able to examine typography in two dimensions;
3. understand the historical development of type;
4. be able to produce type rendered by hand or generated by computer;
5. recognise and understand the formal elements of design, such as space, line and texture in relation to type.

Assessment

Major projects: 70%

Minor projects: 30%
