EFFECTIVE WRITING 1: ACADEMIC WRITING (MCD6010)
Purpose
This subject is designed to develop academic thinking and writing skills. It tackles this goal through the themes of reasoning, writing and discourse.

Learning outcomes
By the conclusion of the subject a student should:
- be able to understand and identify the structure of arguments.
- have a knowledge of different kinds of claims.
- understand the process of reasoning in academic contexts.
- be equipped with a set of critical thinking skills, transferable between disciplines.
- have a developed understanding of the academic essay.
- understand the conventions of academic writing.
- have a knowledge of the concept of discourse.

Logic test (10%)
Short essay 1000 words (20%)
Long essay 1500 words (30%)
