WORKING WITH PEOPLE (MCD7030)

Purpose

This unit aims to prepare students for the world of work in the health sector. Students gain knowledge and practical skills, basic communication skills including theories of communication, barriers and facilitators to good communication, building relationships and problem-solving, and managing people and organisations. Students will gain an appreciation of theory and practical application of motivation, team building, team work, leadership, conflict, sharing power and decision-making.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of key theories of communication.
  2. analyse the communication process using theories of communication.
  3. reflect on the implications of self, values, power and emotional intelligence in communication processes.
  4. demonstrate skills in self awareness.
  5. describe strategies used to communicate effectively in a range of contexts.
  6. demonstrate a basic ability to lead and participate in a group in a manner which respects diverse opinions and perspectives.
  7. critically analyse the role of power in communication and conflict management.
  8. compare and contrast different models of leadership and examine their implications for practice.
  9. explain methods of communication in organisations and strategies to build a successful professional work life within organisations.

Individual paper: 15%
Examination: 40%
