BIOMEDICAL CHEMISTRY (MCD7040)

Purpose

The aim of this unit is to introduce students to four fundamental topics of biochemistry: biological macromolecules; enzyme structure and function; metabolic pathways and synthesis of macromolecules.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. understand the structure and properties of molecules associated with the life process.
  2. comprehend the physical and biochemical properties of proteins especially in their role as enzymes.
  3. understand aspects of cellular metabolism in terms of release of energy and dietary inputs.
  4. extend and complement material given in the lectures in small group teaching and self-directed learning as well as providing experience in problem solving.

Assessment

Small group sessions: 20%
Quizzes: 5%
Mid-trimester test: 10%
Examination: 65%
