A Future Leader in the Making

Jodie Burgess, Deputy Principal, interviews Ne Tan, a Monash College Part 2 Engineering Diploma student, who has recently lodged an application to take part in the Vice Chancellor's Ancora Imparo Student Leadership Program1.

Tell me Ne, how did you find out about the Vice-Chancellor’s Ancora Imparo Student Leadership Program?

I received a global email and then I went to the website to find out about it. It looked really interesting to me so I went along to a seminar about how you apply. At this seminar I noticed that there were many local students. As I am very keen to make connections with the local students and to learn from them, this opportunity was really worth pursuing. I also realised that Monash University is really committed to making the world a better place and from the point of view of an International student; I am excited by the opportunity presented by a Student Leadership Program such as this. At the Introductory Seminar, a medicine student who had previously participated in Ancora Imparo spoke about what he had learned from the program. He spoke about his experiences very well and I knew that Ancora Imparo was something I should do.

I've learned that you are interested in becoming a mechanical engineer for a Formula 1 Team. Why are you interested in this career?

I have always wanted to become a team member for an excellent team like Ferrari, McLaren or BMW. This has been a dream of mine since I was 10 and I remember watching Formula 1 on television. I know that Ancora Imparo will provide me with the skills and attributes to better understand people and teams. There are a lot of people who contribute to the success of Formula 1 teams and this is a sport that I am passionate about – what an opportunity to work with a team, to travel to different countries and be part of a successful environment where even if you lose, you can continue to strive for future success in the next race. I am always trying to do my best and, should my application be accepted, Ancora Imparo will allow me to grow as an individual and to make personal improvements and adjustments to how I manage a challenge. In China it is almost unrealistic to think about working as a mechanical engineer on a Formula 1 Team at the moment – I have been dreaming about becoming a mechanical engineer all my life.'

How do you think the Ancora Imparo Student Leadership Program

The Program will provide me with the environment to discuss ideas with a large number of people and to learn from the ideas of others not in my immediate peer group. The program is designed to identify the potential leaders of the future and I hope that will be me! I believe that I have the potential to be a leader and I want to develop the confidence I have in my abilities. I know that the program will provide me with the company of others who are also very interested in developing their own leadership skills. I want to make the world a better place.
