Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC), formed in 1987, is Australia’s largest multi-disciplinary research centre specialising in the study of injury and injury prevention. The Centre undertakes applied research contracts for government and industry clients throughout Australia and internationally. More fundamental research is undertaken through research grants.
The World Bank considers injury the fastest growing cause of morbidity and mortality in the world and describes it as “… the (least) researched epidemic of the 20 th Century”.
In Australia, injuries account for almost 10% of both deaths and hospital admissions and impact disproportionately on the young. In terms of years of potential life lost (up to age 75) injury outweighs cancer and heart disease combined by a factor of more than two.
MUARC has many clients both national and international, but the Centre maintains special relationships with a number of bodies in its home state of Victoria, Australia: VicRoads, the Transport Accident Commission, the Department of Justice, the Department of Human Services, VicHealth, and the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria.
C-MARC is a newly-established road safety research centre, representing a partnership between Curtin University of Technology and Monash University and supported by the State of WA.
