On the ashes of the stars Mallarme: A Celebration

24 August - 26 September 1998

"Mallarmé is at the source of contemporary art...he unconsciously invented modern space." Marcel Broodthaers, 1969

The centenary of French poet Stéphane Mallarmé's death is celebrated in an exhibition of historical and contemporary artwork, illustrating the significance of the heritage of this French poet for the visual arts. The historical context is set with images by Manet, Matisse, Redon, Vuillard and Whistler. Recent works by Marcel Broodthaers, Immants Tillers, Graeme Hare and others reflect the legacy and currency of Mallarmé's poetry and ideas. Part of the Melbourne, Mallarmé and the 20th Century festival.
