Monash ARC research funding surges ahead

Vital research funded under the Discovery Projects scheme placed Monash second among universities nationally

Monash University has secured the highest grant allocation for Victoria in the latest round of the Australian Research Council's (ARC) Discovery Projects scheme.

Minister for Science and Research, Senator Chris Evans, announced in excess of $300 million of funding for more than 1000 research projects nationwide.

Monash University received more than $34 million in funding, supporting 68 ARC Discovery Projects, 14 Discovery Early Career Researcher Awards (DECRA) and six Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) schemes. Monash was also a collaborating partner in an additional 14 LIEF grants awarded.

Vital research funded under the Discovery Projects scheme placed Monash second among universities nationally. Monash also secured the highest number of Discovery Outstanding Researcher Awards (DORA), winning seven of the 37 awarded nationally.

The funding will support a diverse range of research projects including medicine and health, sciences, arts, pharmacy, technology, business, economics and engineering fields.

Provost and Senior Vice-President Professor Edwina Cornish said the University's strong result was a testament to the quality of the researchers.

"Monash strives to create an environment where academics engage in high quality research and we recognise that our researchers are at the forefront of developing new responses to global challenges,” Professor Cornish said.

"These results reflect the depth of research being undertaken here at Monash, and I thank the Council for its ongoing support of fundamental Australian research that builds innovation and international competitiveness.

“On behalf of the University, I congratulate all our talented and hard-working researchers who continue to strive for excellence.”

The funded projects will begin in 2013 and run for a period of up to three years.
