Carla Zampatti receives honorary doctorate
Monash University has awarded an honorary doctorate to international fashion designer and businesswoman Carla Zampatti.
Monash Chancellor Dr Alan Finkel conferred the Doctor of Laws honoris causa on Dr Zampatti for her contributions to fashion and business, as well as being a role model for women.
Monash Vice-Chancellor Professor Ed Byrne AC said the doctorate highlights Dr Zampatti’s work in the fashion industry, both in Australia and on the international stage.
“Not only is the brand Carla Zampatti a distinctive part of the modern Australian lifestyle, but Dr Zampatti herself has become an iconic role model for women all around the world,” Professor Byrne said.
Dr Zampatti was appointed as a Patron of the University's Prato Centre in Italy in 2012. Through her role as Patron Dr Zampatti champions the research and education which is undertaken at the Centre across disciplines including law, art and design, social sciences and engineering.
Dr Zampatti migrated from Italy in 1950, and launched her first international collection in 1970. Since then, her accomplishments have included the Bulletin/Qantas Businesswoman of the Year, and in 2004 the Italian Government appointed Dr Zampatti Commendator in the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
Dr Zampatti was recognised for her contributions to fashion and business, as well as being a role model for women, when she was appointed Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) as part of the Queen’s Birthday honours in June 2009.
