Introduction

Jacob (presenter 1) & Jen (presenter 1)

Jacob
Hi, my name’s Jacob

Jen
and I’m Jen

Jacob
On a normal day - we’re just average students here at Monash University’s Clayton campus but today we’ve taken on the role of tour guides…

Jen
and you’re our guests..

Jacob
That’s right! It’s our job to make sure that your getting settled, connected and equipped for study and the best way we can do that is to take you on a tour of our and now your new campus.

Jen
As you’re about to find out, there are loads of facilities and services here at Clayton – so we recommend that you have a pen and paper handy… just in case you want more information… (holding up Monash branded paper and pens).

Jacob
Are you ready? Let’s tour shall we…?

Transport

Jacob &
Mark

Jacob
It’s hard to go on a tour of Clayton when you don’t know how to get to campus. But no fear! Here we’ve got transport expert, Mark here to talk to us about the alternatives…

Hi Mark, how’s it going?

Mark
Yes good thanks Jacob, good.

Jacob
Fantastic. So tell us about it.

Mark
Okay, well as you know Monash University is committed to protecting the environment, so it’ll be no surprise that I’m about to encourage sustainable transport to and from Clayton campus.

Jacob
He’s right, it’s no surprise!

Mark
Ah, Monash Uni offers shuttle buses to and from campuses, and the bus loop here – many suburban bus routes run to and from the campus from the local train stations.

Jacob
Fantastic – what about cyclists?

Mark
There’s many options for cyclists. There are, ah, a range of bike racks at ah Clayton campus and the Student Association runs the Bikery which conducts all bike repairs for you if you need them.

Jacob
So what about drivers?

Mark
There are many options for parking here on campus but best of all Monash University runs a carpooling matching service so that if you are a students and you come to university with other students in your car, you are able to park free of charge.

Jacob
And meet new people as well.

Bus loop

Mark
And take care of the environment! So just head to the my.monash portal page for all of your eco-friendly options.

Jacob
Fantastic. Well thanks heaps for that Mark (shaking hands). Thanks for your expertise

Mark
Thank-you Jacob.

Jacob
Really appreciate it.

Student Services

Jen &
Michelle

Jen
So you’ve travelled to uni with Jacob, now it’s time to travel around the uni. Right now I’m in the Campus Centre, which is the heart of Clayton.

Let’s start on the ground floor at the student service centre. Hi Michelle…

Michelle
Hi Jen. Welcome to the student service centre.

Jen
Thanks! So tell us what you guys do here.

Michelle
We help students with their administrative needs.

Jen
So is that like getting your ID card and paying fees?

Service centre staff
Yeah, they’re a couple of things we take care of. We also take care of things like parking permits, travel concession cards, academic transcripts, graduations – the list goes on and on. Um, the best thing to do if you have any administrative questions, is to pop onto our online system, ask.monash, or you can pop in and see one of our staff members here.

Student service centre, ground floor, Campus Centre

Jen
So remember that - ask.monash. It’s an excellent resource if you’re looking for quick answers.

Service centre staff
And, if we can’t answer your question here, we’ll definitely be able to point you in the right direction.

Jen
Oh well great! Can you point me in the direction of Jacob?!

University Health Service

Jacob & Dr Kirwood

Jacob
I’m in the waiting room of Monash University’s Health Service. If you’re not feeling well or want to get a check up like my friend Victor here, you can book in to see a campus doctor or nurse. They’ve got male and female doctors on site and if you want to, you can book an appointment like I’ve just done or you can come in if it’s a real emergency.

Hi Doctor Kirwood. How are we today?

Dr Kirwood
Good morning Jacob, very well. And yourself?

Jacob
Oh, fantastic, Wouldn’t be here otherwise.

Dr Kirwood
True.

Jacob
Just had a couple of enquiries about how the Health Service is run.

University Health Service reception, ground floor, Campus Centre

Dr Kirwood
Sure, we’re open Monday to Friday from about 9 to 4:30 for appointments. And it’s best to make an appointment, which is easy to do, by rolling up to the desk or you can ring on the phone number, which is on the website.

Jacob
Fantastic. What about billing?

Dr Kirwood
Sure. If you’re a local student, just bring your Medicare card and if you’re an international student, its also bulk billed with your insurance.

Jacob
Fantastic. Sounds pretty reasonable doesn’t it? You can see the Health Services five days a week Monday to Friday, located in the Campus Centre ground floor.

Employment and Career Development

Jen & David

Jen
I’m still on the ground floor. Only now I’m heading in to talk to the Careers team. Hi, David.

David
Hi Jen.

Jen
Can you help me? I’m in the market for some part-time work.

David
Ah well, you’ve definitely come to the right place. Whether you’re looking for work now or to plan your future career, Employment and Career Development – us – we’re the people to see!

Employment and Career Development reception, ground floor, Campus Centre

So students can find out about all of our services on the Careers web page but you’ll also find Career Gateway as a part of that web page and Career Gateway allows employers to target students and postgraduates in their recruitment.

Jen
Cool, well I’ll check out what’s available after this tour... (to the camera) how’d you think I’d go with a career in media?

On screen: Employment and Career Development - http://careers.monash.edu.au/

Campus Centre retail

Jacob and Jen

Jacob
We could show you the bookstores, the optometrist, Apple store and gift shop, as well as the chemist

Jen
Or all of the eateries that are available in the ground floor of the Campus Centre.

Jacob
But surely you want to do a bit of exploration for yourselves? The best advice we can give you is don’t be afraid to get lost!

Jen
Or ask other students for directions! That’s also a great strategy to meet new people.

Jacob
(goes up to another student) Excuse me, do you know where the Co-op bookshop is?

Male student
Sure, it’s down this way… I’ll show you…

Jacob
Fantastic!

Jen
Thanks. (Giving the camera the thumbs up).

MSA

Jacob and Lauren

Jacob
It’s time to head up the stairs, or the lift for disability access. I’m about to meet Lauren who’s gonna give us the low-down on Clayton’s student association.

Hey Lauren, how are you today?

Lauren
I’m good thank-you Jacob. How are you?

Jacob
Well thanks. So I went to the international students’ trivia night last week – is that what the MSA is all about?

Lauren
Yeah, absolutely. We have services for international students, mature-age students and of course just all students here at Monash in general. Um, so you can get involved by ah joining one of our many activities on campus. We have lots of events and parties you can get involved in. You can join a club, you can start writing for our student newspaper, do a short course like first aid or coffee making. You could even get involved by visiting our women’s lounge or our queer lounge or you could sign up with MUST, our student theatre.

Jacob
Fantastic. So there’s a lot of fun, interesting and exciting social events but what about the advocacy?

MSA reception, first floor, Campus Centre

Lauren
Yeah, absolutely. That’s really important. The MSA provides support and representation for all students here at Monash so if you run into trouble in your university degree, feel free to pop by his front desk, come and visit us and we’ll come and help you out.

Jacob
Fantastic. So I’ve got an issue with my co-presenter. Is that something you could help me out with?

On screen: Monash Student Association - http://www.msa.monash.edu.au

Clubs and Societies

Jacob and Clubs and Societies staff

Jen
Nice one Jacob! You’ve left your mic on. I can hear you!

I’m just around the corner from the MSA reception in the Clubs and Societies office. Non here takes care of over 100 Clubs and Societies on campus.

Non
How awesome is it to be able to say 100 plus clubs and societies? Surely there’s something for everyone in there.

You can get involved with clubs that meet to share their hobbies, there’s academic clubs, volunteer and community organisations, um cultural associations as well. There’s anything from the Chocolate Society to the Society of Arts Students.

Jen
So if I have a good idea, could I start a club?

Non
Sure. We want everyone to get involved.

Clubs and Societies office, first floor, Campus Centre

Jen
Well great. For more information visit the Clubs and Societies office or check out their website.

(to the camera and overacted) To be or not to be.. (returning to normal) I think I’ll go and check out the Monash Shakespeare Company...

On screen: http://msa.monash.edu.au/clubs/

Monash Postgraduate Association

Jen & Jenny

Jen
Just around the corner is MSA’s Wholefoods restaurant – if you’re vegetarian or a vegan, that will become your home away from home.

We’re now coming to Monash Postgraduate Association’s office. Hi Jenny.

Jenny
Hi Jen, how are you?

Jen
Good. So tell us, what’s the MPA all about?

Jenny
Well we provide assistance, advocacy, seminars and workshops for all coursework and research postgraduates.

Jen
And you get social?

MPA main office, first floor, Campus Centre

Jenny
Yeah we do. We run free lunches. We have coffee clubs and lots of networking opportunities.

Jen
Well great! So postgraduates - MPA is the place for you.

On screen: Monash Postgraduate Association - http://mpa.monash.edu.au/

Health and Wellbeing hub

Jacob, Shelby and Shyama

Jen
So are you starting to get a feel for just how big the Campus Centre is? We’re still exploring the student services that you’ll find upstairs…

Right now, we’re heading towards the Health and Wellbeing hub where student advisers and counsellors are at the ready to help you…

Well here we are at the Health and Wellbeing hub. Such a bright and inviting place and I’m here to talk to Shelby. Hi Shelby.

Shelby
Hi there Jen. How you doing?

Jen
I’m great thank-you. Well, tell us what the hub’s all about.

Shelby
We provide assistance to students with matters that impact on their lives personally and their study lives as well.

Jen
So like financial aid and childcare?

Health and Wellbeing hub reception, 1st floor, Campus Centre

Shelby
Most definitely. So we’ve got financial advice and support, off-campus housing support, international student support. Also we deal with chaplaincy and any matters to do with um, like family and childcare services too… and much, much more.

Jen
Well, if any of us are having a rough time emotionally, is this the place to come to?

Shelby
Certainly is. Shyama’s here and she’s gonna be able to tell you all about that one.

Jen
Hi.

Shyama
Hello, how are you?

Jen
Good thank-you.

Shyama
Good. Um, yes we do offer a free, confidential counselling, um, service and it is offered to all students um who want to talk about their, any, issues, so there are no trivial issues so they can come and talk to us about anything they do have concerns with. And um, we offer a range of um different programs for them as well.

Jen
(sitting cross-legged and meditating, eyes closed)
How about meditation and getting zen?

Shyama
Sure you can get zen with us. We offer group programs on managing your, managing your stress and anxiety and depression as well as we do offer group programs on meditation as well.

Jen
(one eye open)
Is it expensive?

Shyama
No, there’s no charge…

Jen
(with both eyes open and to the camera)
That’s right, there’s no charge! Hub services are available because Monash understands that students face all kinds of tricky situations. The main points are - you’re not alone and everybody needs a helping hand time to time... (Shyama offers a hand to help Jen up)

Jen
Thanks Shyama.

Shyama
Your welcome.

Safer Community

Jacob and Sally

Jacob
To keep you safer on campus, I’m here to talk to Sally from the Safer Community Unit. Hi Sally, how are you today?

Sally
I’m well thanks Jake.

Jacob
Fantastic. So tell me, why would a student contact your department?

Health and Wellbeing hub office, 1st floor, Campus Centre

Sally
Well Jake, we really want students to contact us if they’re concerned about their own safety in any way at all. We want them to get advice early. Ah, for instance they might be feeling threatened by the behaviour of somebody else, they might be receiving unwanted attention, maybe through text or emails and we want them to know how to respond to that quickly. Ah, and students also come to us if they concerned about the welfare of others. So if you find yourself in this position, please call this number.

Jacob
Fantastic, well thanks heaps for seeing us today Sally. We’ll be seeing Security soon as well and they’ll be able to tell us the role they play in looking after your safety on campus.

Library

Jacob, Jen and Clare

Jen
We’ll we’ve finally left the Campus Centre.

Jacob
So now it’s time to talk about study support.

Jen
And what better place to do that than the Library?

Jacob
Hey Clare.

Jen
Hi Clare.

Clare
Hi Jen, Hi Jacob. How are you?

Jen
Good thank-you.

Jacob
Well thanks. So we’re currently out the front of the Matheson Library but that’s only one of three major libraries on campus, right?

Clare
That’s right. Um, the Matheson Library deals with the arts, the humanities, um Business and Economics and Education. But we have the Hargrave Andrew Library and that deals with IT, the Sciences, Medicine, um Engineering and Health Sciences. And then we have the Law Library as well.

Jen
So you’d say that the Library is more than just books?

Clare
Of course, we are a partner with you. Um, we feel that aside from books, we offer um computers, on-line resources, and um we also provide librarians and learning skills people to help you with your research and your studies.

Jacob
Fantastic. So if we have any questions about assignments, or referencing or even study skills, we can just drop on in?

Outside Matheson Library, Building 4

Clare
Come on in to the information desk to get some help or to one of our drop-in sessions. We also have an introductory tour which I’d encourage everyone to come along to cause it’s a great way to get to know about the Library and also we have our website.

Jacob
Fantastic, well thanks heaps Clare.

Jen
Thanks Clare.

Clare
Thank-you. Nice to meet you.

Jacob & Jen (in unison).
You too.

Disability Liaison Unit

Jacob and Natalie

Jacob
If you have an ongoing illness or a disability, the Disability Liaison Unit – affectionately known as the DLU – are all about you. Hi Natalie, how are you today?

Natalie
Very well thank-you.

Jacob
Fantastic. Could you tell us what services the DLU offers?

Disability Liaison Unit, 1st floor, Building 55

Natalie
Sure, the DLU can assist with things like note-taking, alternative formatting of course materials, exam arrangements and assistive technology. We’re about ensuring all students have access to the best possible learning opportunities!

Jacob
Fantastic. Well thanks heaps for that today Natalie.

Natalie
No problem.

Jacob
Cheers.

Security

Jen and Craig

Jen
Now let’s say you’re studying late and you feel a little bit weird about walking around campus by yourself… Monash Security are the people to see.

Today we’ve got Craig from Security to tell us all about the service. Hi Craig.

Craig

Hi, how are you.
Jen
Good thank-you.

Craig
That’s good.

Security and Traffic Building 61

Jen
So tell us – can a student call you if they need, say, a walk to their car?
Craig
Yes, they can. If they just call 9905 3059 from their mobile phone, we’ll be able to escort them anywhere on campus.
Jen
And can they call you at any time?
Craig
Yes, they can call us anytime. We’ve got guards here 24 hours a day.
Jen
And is there anything else new students should know about safety?
Craig
We’re all about preventing things from occurring. So the main thing is to have their ID cards with them so we know who they are, know how to contact us with that phone number I mentioned and know where we are in Building 61.
Jen
What about if there is an emergency?

On screen: Phone – 9905 3059

Craig
If there is an emergency, they can dial 333 from any internal phone or 9905 3333 and they’ll be speaking to a security guard in our control room where we can help them straight away.
Jen
And is there anywhere students can go to get all of this information?

On screen: Internal Phones – 333
External phones – 9905 3333

Craig
We’ve got a website, a web page. All the information is on there along with helpful tips.

Jen
Well, thank-you so much Craig. It’s great to know you guys are always watching. But I have to go and meet Jacob at Monash Sport.

Craig
Ok

Jen
Thanks.

Craig
See ya.

Monash Sport

Jacob, Jen and Alison

Jen
We’re here in Building 1, the home of Monash Sport. And who lives here?

Jacob (lifting weights)
Fit people!

Jen
That’s right, Monash Sport is all about health – not just the lycra set. And to tell us all about it, I’d like to introduce Fit Alison.

Alison
Hey guys.

Jen
Hey.

Alison
Well, we actually cater for all fitness levels; from those just starting out to elite athletes. Monash Sport manages a well-equipped gym, group fitness classes, we have some sport courts and ovals, swimming pools and you can also join TeamMonash and enter one of the community fitness team events.

Jacob
Ah, I don’t know where to start… (keeps lifting weights).

Monash Sport reception, Building 1

Alison
Well, come in and see us and we can help you out with all your options or you can hop online and read all about what Monash Sport has to offer.

Jen
Thanks Alison. (Looking at Jacob flexing) Oh, this is just embarrassing, come on, let’s wrap this tour up (dragging Jacob off). Sorry about him!

Environment

Jacob

Jacob
Monash University is committed to sustainability.

You can reduce your environmental footprint by signing up to the University’s Environmental Pledge. For every person that signs up, the University will donate $5 to renewable energy.

Next to recycling bins near Hargrave-Andrew Library.

What else can you do? Turn off lights and equipment when leaving rooms and use recycling bins, just like these (motioning to recycling bin).

Jacob and Jen

Jen
So are you getting excited? Even just a little bit?

Jacob
We’re excited for you because we know what it’s like to start your Monash experience. It’s a big place with plenty of opportunities to learn, meet people, get supported, get lost, get found and enjoy yourself!

Jen
Don’t be afraid to explore and take advantage of all the services we’ve got to offer.

Jacob
Here’s to the beginning of your success at Monash University Clayton campus.

Jen & Jacob (in unison)
Yeah! (Thumbs up).
