Tim and Kris outside on the main lawn area of Peninsula campus
Tim: Hi all, my name is Tim
Kris: And I'm Kris
Tim: On a normal day, we're students at Monash University's Peninsula campus but today we've taken on the role of tour guides...
Kris: And you're our guests...
Tim: That's right! It's our job to help you get settled, connected and equipped for study, we'll be doing that by taking you on a tour of our, and your new, campus.
Kris: As you're about to find out, there's loads of student services and facilities at Peninsula
Tim: I'm off to talk to from Facilities and Services staff from Transport about the best way to get here...
Kris: And I'm going to see Sharon at the Student Service Centre...
Kris walking up and then standing at the Bus Stop with Clair from Facilities and Services
Kris: There's a variety of transport options to Peninsula. Here's Facilities and Services staff to tell us more about them.
Sharon: G'day Kris
Kris: Now we know Monash is committed to protecting the environment - can the way students get to and from uni play a role?
Sharon: Absolutely. We advocate green options so if you live locally, you can ride or walk to campus. There's also a free, regular shuttle bus between Clayton and Peninsula, a bus service from the train station and suburban buses that stop nearby.
Kris: Anything for cyclists?
Sharon: We have great facilities for cyclists including heaps of bike racks like these (motioning to nearby racks), undercover racks, a lockable storage area in Building 5, shower rooms and Transport User Maps that identify walking paths, bike tracks and other services for cyclists.
Kris: Now what about drivers?
Sharon: Well you could drive to uni by yourself and pay for parking but we recommend carpooling. It's a great way to meet students and reduce your environmental footprint. Log onto my.monash to find the University's carpooling matching service and your perfect match...
Kris: Thanks Sharon I'm off to find a travel buddy to get some free parking action...

Tim at the counter in the Student Service Centre with Sharon
Tim: I'm here at the Student Service Centre with Student Service staff.
Sharon: Hi Tim
Tim: Tell us about what goes on here.
Sharon: We help students with their administration matters.
Tim: Like student IDs and fee payments?
Sharon: Yes, they are a couple of things we take care of. Think: student forms, transport concessions, scholarship enquiries - the list goes on and on. The best thing to do if you have an administrative question is to come and see us or visit our online enquiry service, ask.monsh.
(On screen - Ask.Monash: http://my.monash.edu.au/askmonash/)
Tim: (interrupting and to the camera) Remember ask.monash, it's an excellent resource if you're looking for quick answers.
Sharon: And, if we can't answer your questions, we'll certainly point you in the right direction.
Tim: Great, how about pointing me in the direction of Kris?!
Kris walking to the fron of the Security Counter with Shau
Kris: I'm with X from Security who are here to keep you safe on and around campus. Now let's say I'm studying late and feel a bit weird about walking around by myself... could I call you for a walk to my car?
Shaun: Yes, we can escort you to your car, student residences and to other locations around the campus.
Kris: Can students call at any time?
Shaun: Yes, the service is available 24 hours...
Kris: Now what about in emergencies?
Shaun: If you feel uncomfortable or face an emergency situation, call us first. On campus, dial 333 from any landline or 9904 4108 from your mobile. We recommend you put the numbers on screen in your phone.
(on screen Emergencies: 000 or 9905 3333 - General Security 9904 4318)
Kris: What else should new students know about safety?
Shaun: We're all about prevention. Head to the Peninsula Security web page to find out about our initiatives to keep you safe on campus
(on screen: http://fsd.monash.edu.au/security)
Kris: Thanks Security staff. It's great to know you're around - any chance you could walk me to the IT Service Desk?
Tim waling inside the Library foyer and introducing Paula
Tim: It's time to focus on study support - and where better to do that than the Library? Meet Library staff
Paula: Hi Tim
Tim: Now we know you've got books in the Library, but what else can we find here?
Paula: As you will quickly come to learn, the Library is more than just books... we are a partner in your education. We have journals, on-line resources and computers; but also Learning Skills Advisers who are available to provide research assistance and study advice.
Tim: So if we have any questions about assignments, referencing or study skills, what should we do?
Paula: To find out more, ask at the information desk, register for an introductory class or visit the Library's website.
Tim: Will do! Thanks Library staff.

Kris standing at the Information Technology Counter talking with Hugh
Kris: For all your IT needs, visit Information Technology Services at the ITS desk - they help with passwords, accessing wireless services and other IT stuff.
We are well connected here with an easy-to-use wireless network and 24 hour computer labs. If you have any hassles, just visit the folks at ITS - not just handy, they're friendly too!
Tim at the Health and Wellbeing HUB counter talking with Shez
Tim: Another great service for students is the Health and Wellbeing Hub where you'll find a range of student support professionals.
Tim: Hi Shez
Shez: Hi Tim
Tim: Can you tell us what the HUB does?
Shez: We assist students with matters that impact on their personal and study lives.
Tim: Like say financial aid or child care
Shez: Yes - exactly. We assist with family and childcare matters; international student support and off-campus housing. Plus we offer services like chaplaincy and financial aid.
Tim: What if I'm feeling unwell?
Shez: We have doctors and nurses on staff who can attend to your medical needs. We bulk bill local students with a Medicare card and international students with an insurance card.
Tim: (one eye open) Expensive?
Shez: There's no charge...
Tim: (with both eyes open and to the camera) That's right, there's no charge! Hub services are available because Monash understands students face all kinds of tricky situations. The main points are - you're not alone and we all need support from time to time. Anything else new students should know?
Shez: Yes, we are your link to other services like the Disability Liaison Unit, Indigenous Student Support and Employment and Careers Development.
Tim: I can see why you're called a ‘hub'! Ok, so what about if we're having a rough time emotionally, do we come to the same place?
Shez: You do...
(On screen - Health and Wellbeing: http://www.monash.edu.au/health-wellbeing/)
Shez I'm on the Counselling team and we're co-located with the Hub.
Shez: We're a free confidential service, run by psychologists and social workers. We encourage students to talk to us about where they're at - there are no trivial matters. The sooner you get support, the sooner you're back on track.
Tim: What about meditation and getting zen?
Shez: Sure you can get zen with us - we run group programs that teach stress management skills, including meditation, and how to reduce the impact of depression or anxiety

Kris sitting at a desk with Lisa from Employment and Career Development
Kris: I'm also here at the Hub and I'm going to chat with Lisa from Employment and career development about some part-time work.
Lisa: Well Kris your definitely in the right place, whether you are looking for part-time, fulltime or need help planning your future career, Employment and Career development can help you. Students can find out all about our services on our web page: (on screen: http://careers.monash.edu.au/)
Lisa: and on that webpage you will find a link to Career Gateway which is like an on-line jobs board where employers can advertise their jobs if they are trying to target Monash students or post-graduate
Kris: Excellent, I might have a look at that after the tour, do you think I might have a career in media?
Lisa: I think so! (laughing)
Tim walks up to Safer Community Desk located in the HUB area
Tim: Hi Michael
Michael: Hi Tim
Tim: Earlier, we spoke to Security staff from Security about their role in keeping you safe on campus, but right now, I'm with Michael from the Safer Community Unit. Why would a student contact your department? Michael, tell us about the service...
Michael: Students contact us when they feel threatened by text messages, emails or unwanted attention or because they're worried about the welfare of someone else. We are here to encourage early help-seeking behaviour and to provide those in need with appropriate support. If you find yourself in this position, we encourage you to visit the Hub or phone the Safer Community Line which is on the screen right now.

Chris: Well, we encourage students to get involved in TEAM Monash community fitness events, to enter the Monash or Australian University Games or join a social sporting club.

Kris inside the Monash Bookshop talking with Mel
Kris: I'm here at the Peninsula bookshop with Mel. Please tell us what you've got on offer here.
Mel: The bookshop has all the books and unit guides a student might need. We've also got cards, gifts, stationery and more. And if it's not here, we'll get it in for you.

Tim at the MONSU Peninsula Service Desk talking with MONSU rep
Tim: A campus would not be complete without its Student Association and we have a mighty fine one here at Peninsula. To tell us more, I'm joined by Raffa from the Monash University Student Union - Peninsula.
Raffa: Hey Kris
Tim: Now last week I was at a trivia night in the Student Lounge - is that what MONSU Peninsula is all about?
Raffa: Yes, its our job to provide Peninsula students with services and social activities. Get involved and make friends by attending parties, by joining a club, or by writing for the student newsletter. All students are welcome at everything we put on, including activities organised by our division for international students, OSS. They support international students and host fantastic multicultural events.
Tim: So there's lots of fun stuff, but what about advocacy?
Raffa: It's important to remind students that MUBS provides representation and support. (to the camera) Come and talk to us and we'll take you through the many ways we can assist with student rights and welfare matters.
Tim: And you guys also run the MONSU Service Desk right?
Raffa: We sure do! At the Service Desk we bind and laminate assignments; we sell phone cards for overseas calls; provide a fax service and can organise your dry cleaning. We are also a part Post Office. But most importantly, we are your link to MONSU reps and services so if you need anything, ask right here.
Tim: Great, well I've got a problem with my co-host, is that something you can help me with? (winks to camera).
Kris at the Monash Postgraduate Association student lounge speaking with Yvonne.
Kris: Nice one Tim! You've left your mic on - I can hear you! Anyway, I'm with Yvonne who is going to tell us all about the services they provide Peninsula's postgraduate students.
Yvonne: Hi Kris, The MPA supports the research and coursework postgraduate students. We provide assistance, representation and advocacy for postgraduates and also run educational seminars and workshops.
Kris: Do you get social?
Yvonne: We do get social... with events like coffee clubs, lunches and networking opportunities.
Kris: Great, well postgrads - MPA is the place for you.
Tim walking in the Student Service Centre Monash Residential Services Counter
Tim: So you've heard how the Hub can assist with off-campus housing but what about on-campus housing for those who want to roll out of bed and into a lecture? Laura is here to tell us more...
Laura: Monash Residential Services, also known as MRS, manages housing on campus. Each unit has all the comforts you'd expect from your home away from home. Better still, MRS provide lots of support to residential students and organise all sorts of activities, like pyjama parties and movie nights, on a regular basis.

For every person that takes the pledge, the university doTims $5 to renewable energy. What else can you do? Use recycle bins and switch off lights and equipment when you leave a room. (throwing empty can into the recycling bin)
