Simon Bell

Dr Simon Bell is an internationally renowned pharmacist researcher and educator. He is Associate Professor, Centre for Medicine Use and Safety, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University.

Dr Bell has published more than 170 articles in scientific journals, primarily reporting the use of data driven approaches to optimise medicines use. He has secured more than $29 million in research funding as either chief or associate investigator. Dr Bell is a Chief Investigator of the $25 million National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre and a Chief Investigator of the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence on Frailty and Healthy Ageing. Other recent sources of research funding include Alzheimer’s Australia Dementia Research Foundation, Victorian Government Department of Health and Human Services, Australian Government Department of Health, Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship and Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

Dr Bell’s research has had considerable impact on local, national and international health policy and practice. His research recently led to the Victorian Government Department of Health and Human Services to adopt three new medication quality indicators for residential aged care services. Dr Bell’s research into Australia’s Home Medicines Review (HMR) program was recently highlighted by Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Baggoley and prompted a press release by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA). Dr Bell is a former Project Director of the Veterans’ MATES Program, a national program that uses administrative data to improve health and medicine use among Australian veterans and their dependents.

His research has attracted considerable attention in the professional and lay media, including on ABC Radio’s PM program, ABC Radio Canberra and Australian Ageing Agenda. Dr Bell has been the recipient of a number of awards, including the Alzheimer’s Australia Resthaven Dementia Research Award in 2013, Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists (ASCEPT) Denis Wade Johnson & Johnson New Investigator Award in 2014, and Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy Impact Award in 2015.

Dr Bell has given presentations in more than 30 countries, acted as an advisor to the World Health Organization and actively collaborates with prestigious international institutions including the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and Harvard University in Boston.
