Bachelor of Arts in the Monash University College of Art and Design
1. The degree
There shall be:
1.1 a degree of Bachelor of Arts with fully accredited
disciplines which constitute separate degree courses.
1.2 the pass degree course in each of the fields of study shall be
-
- Bachelor of Arts (Ceramic Design)
- Bachelor of Arts (Craft)
- Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art)
- Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design)
- Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts)
1.3 Each degree of Bachelor of Arts (Craft), Bachelor of Arts (Ceramic
Design), Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) and Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design)
may be obtained as a pass degree or as a degree with honours.
2. Definitions
In these regulations and in the outline of studies, unless the contrary
intention appears-
'college' means the Monash University College of Art and Design;
'college board' means the college board of the college;
'college information handout' means a college handbook or such other
publication whether in bound, loose leaf or electronic form concerning
courses of study in the college as the college board determines from
time to time;
'corequisite' in relation to a given subject is a designated subject
which is studied before or at the same time as the given subject and
must be passed before the given subject can be counted towards a degree;
'course of study' means the subjects to be completed by a candidate to
qualify for a degree;
'degree' means the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the college;
'elective subject' is a subject taught in any faculty and approved by
the director of the college as appropriate to the particular year level.
'head' means the head of the relevant department/school;
'prerequisite' in relation to a given subject is a designated subject
that must be passed before a candidate can enrol for the given subject;
and
'subject' means an amount of work at a particular year level of a course
of study as determined from time to time by the college board and counting
as a specified number of credit points towards the degree.
3. Course
of study requirements
3.1 The college board may determine the requirements for a course of
study, including, but not limited to -
3.1.1 compulsory and elective subjects;
3.1.2 prerequisite and corequisite requirements for any subject;
3.1.3 subject combinations;
3.1.4 thesis component of the honours degree;
3.1.5 combined courses;
3.1.6 part-time courses; and
3.1.7 examination or assessment.
3.2 The college board must cause to be published in a college information
handout all matters determined under this section.
4. Approval of subjects
4.1 Before enrolling in any year, a candidate must obtain approval of
the head for the selection of subject to be taken in the year.
4.2 Except with the permission of the head, a candidate shall not -
4.2.1 undertake in any one year more than the required number of subjects
as outlined for the particular level of study; or
4.2.2 undertake subjects from subsequent levels of study until the preceding
subject sequences have been completed; or
4.2.3 undertake a subject for which any prerequisite subject is designated
in the outline of subjects unless the prerequisite subject has been completed;
or
4.2.4 undertake a subject for which any corequisite subject is designated
in the outline of subjects unless the corequisite subject has been completed
or is being undertaken at the same time.
5. Assessment of studio subjects
All studio subjects are assessed by a panel of assessors at the completion
of each semester or as indicated in a college information handout. Progressive
feedback is provided by subject lecturers throughout the year.
6. Course
progression
6.1 A candidate's progression through the course is dependant on the
successful completion of each semester, and year, except in the case
of-
6.1.1 a candidate who fails a subject, or subjects (not including the
major studio subject) and is granted by the head on advice of the assessment
panel, the opportunity to progress to the next level and in that event
-
6.1.1.1 the failed subject or subjects must be completed as required
by the head; and
6.1.1.2 where a candidate has achieved at least forty percent in a failed
subject at the end of year assessment, that candidate may complete a
set amount of additional work as detailed by the assessment panel in
that subject. The additional work must be completed during the period
December to February and assessed by the panel in February.
6.2 A candidate who fails to achieve a pass in the major studio subject
or drawing will not normally be permitted to proceed to the next level
of the course except with the permission of the head and only under exceptional
circumstances.
6.3 All candidates shall participate in the annual degree folio exhibition.
7. The pass degree
A candidate for the pass degree shall qualify for the degree upon complying
with these regulations and successful completion of three levels of the
course in accordance with the requirements outlined in a college information
handout.
8. The degree with honours
8.1 A candidate for the degree with honours shall complete the course
for the pass degree and shall then pursue a special program of studies
prescribed by the college board. A candidate shall not be permitted to
proceed to the special program of studies unless in the third year of
study for the pass degree the candidate has reached a standard satisfactory
to the college board. The standard is normally set at credit level, or
above.
8.2 Candidates may specialise in one major area for one year of full
time study or study a selected range of subjects over two years of part-time
study.
8.3 The program of study shall be established in consultation with the
head and monitored by a panel of experts until a satisfactory level has
been attained and assessment or examination arranged.
8.4 A candidate for the degree with honours shall qualify for the degree
upon complying with these regulations and successful completion of the
honours year of the course in accordance with the requirements outlined
in a college information handout.
9. Changes in regulations
9.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations
as in force from time to time.
9.2 Where the college board considers that a candidate has, since first
enrolling for the degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any
change in the regulations, the college board must permit the candidate
to qualify for the degree under the regulations in force at some time
during candidature, provided the board is satisfied that the work so
required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently
required to complete the course of study.
