Undergraduate awards


Part 1 - General


1. Interpretation

In these regulations, unless the contrary intention appears -

'award' means a degree or diploma;

'candidate' means a person enrolled as a candidate for an award;

'course of study' in relation to an award means the course of study for the award as determined by the faculty board under these regulations;

'credit point' means the unit of measurement used to express the weight of a unit;

'dean' means the dean of the faculty;

'degree' means a pass degree listed in schedule 1 or an honours degree listed in schedule 2;

'diploma' means a diploma listed in schedule 4;

'faculty' means the Faculty of Business and Economics;

'faculty board' means the faculty board of the faculty;

'faculty information handout' means a faculty handbook or such other publication whether in bound, loose leaf or electronic form concerning a course of study as the faculty board determines from time to time;

'off-campus learning' as a mode of undertaking an award, means the course of study for the award is undertaken through the Monash Centre for Teaching and Learning Support;

'Open Learning' means the Open Learning Agency of Australia Pty Ltd.


2. Course of study

2.1 The course of study for an award comprises the units determined by the faculty board under this section.

2.2 The faculty board may from time to time, with the approval of the Academic Board, determine the units, compulsory and optional, comprising a course of study and in relation to the units may determine any matter or thing including but not limited to -

2.2.1 timing, frequency, content and duration;

2.2.2 prerequisite, corequisite and sequential units;

2.2.3 unit combinations;

2.2.4 major and minor studies;

2.2.5 candidate attendance and participation;

2.2.6 credit points;

2.2.7 assessment; and

2.2.8 satisfactory completion.

2.3 The faculty board may determine special requirements for or in relation to a course of study for an award undertaken -

2.3.1 on any particular campus;

2.3.2 by distance education or through Open Learning; or

2.3.3 pursuant to these regulations, concurrently with another degree.

2.4 The faculty board must cause any determination under this section to be published in a faculty information handout.


3. Approval of work

3.1 Except where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines, a candidate in any year of a course of study may undertake only units which, before enrolment in that year, were specifically approved for the candidate by the dean.

3.2 The dean -

3.2.1 may authorise a candidate for an award to undertake, in another educational institution, specified study towards the award; and

3.2.2 in such event, must specify the credit that will be granted towards the award in respect of any such studies satisfactorily completed.

4. Credit points

Except where the faculty board is any particular case otherwise determines, a candidate must not in any one year undertake units with a total value of more than 48 credit points.


5. Credit for equivalent work

5.1 Subject to this section, a candidate for an award who has completed work which the dean is satisfied is equivalent to particular requirements of the relevant course of study must be deemed to have completed those requirements and must be granted credit towards the award in respect of them.

5.2 The maximum number of credit points that may be granted towards a degree -

5.2.1 in respect of diploma units, is 72; and

5.2.2 in total, is 96.

5.3 The maximum number of credit points that may be granted towards a diploma is 24.

5.4 Except where in any particular case the faculty board otherwise determines, credit under this section must not be granted in respect of work completed more than 10 years before admission to candidature.

5.5 A candidate granted credit under this section must complete the relevant course of study within the time specified by the dean.


6. Single units

6.1 The faculty board may permit a person who is not a candidate for a particular award to undertake one or more units in the course of study for that award but, except as otherwise provided in subsection 6.2, no credit may be granted towards the award in respect of any unit so undertaken.

6.2 The faculty board may, in respect of a unit undertaken pursuant to subsection 6.1, grant a person credit towards the relevant award where -

6.2.1 the unit has been satisfactorily completed; and

6.2.2 the person has subsequently become a candidate for the award.


7. Changes in regulations and course of study requirements

7.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the relevant course of study determined by the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published from time to time.

7.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for an award, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit the candidate to qualify for the award under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the board is satisfied the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study.

Part 2 - Pass degrees


8. Degrees

8.1 In this part "pass degree" means a degree listed in Schedule 1.


9. Mode

9.1 A pass degree must be undertaken pursuant to these regulations.

9.2 Of the pass degrees listed in Schedule 1, those in -

9.2.1 Part A must be undertaken on campus;

9.2.2 Part B must be undertaken either on campus or by off-campus learning; and

9.2.3 Part C must be undertaken via Open Learning.


10. Bachelor of Business Studies

A person may undertake studies towards the degree of Bachelor of Business Studies without being an enrolled candidate for the degree.


11. Near Pass examination result

Except where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines, a candidate for a pass degree who obtains an examination result of Near Pass (NP) in a first year unit which forms part of a sequence of units , may not proceed to a higher level unit in the same sequence.


12. Time limits

12.1 Except where otherwise provided in the regulations or where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines, the course of study for a pass degree must be completed in a minimum of three and a maximum of ten years

12.2 There is no minimum period of candidature for a degree undertaken via Open Learning.


13. Qualification

A person who satisfactorily completes the course of study for a pass degree qualifies for that degree.

Part 3 - Honours degrees


14. Degrees

14.1 In this part honours degree means a degree listed in Schedule 2.

14.2 An honours degree must be undertaken pursuant to these regulations and on campus.


15. Admission to candidature

15.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for an honours degree must have -

15.1.1 qualified for a degree of the university; or

15.1.2 hold a qualification which the faculty board is satisfied is equivalent to a degree of the university.

15.2 An applicant must not be admitted to candidature unless the faculty board is satisfied that -

15.2.1 the applicant is adequately prepared for study at honours level; and

15.2.2 adequate supervision and facilities are available.


16. Time limits

Except as otherwise determined by the dean in any particular case, the course of study for an honours degree must be completed in one year of full-time or two years of part-time candidature.


17. Grades of honours

An honours degree must be awarded in one of the following grades -

  • HI

  • HIIA

  • HIIB

  • HIII


18. Qualification

A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for an honours degree qualifies for the degree in the grade determined by the faculty board.

Part 4 - Double degrees


19. In this part schedule means schedule 3.


20. Degrees

A candidate may -

20.1.1 with the approval of the faculty board of this faculty and of the other faculty involved, undertake a degree of this faculty specified in part A of the schedule concurrently with the degree or one of the degrees of another faculty specified in that part in relation to the particular degree of this faculty; or

20.1.2 with the approval of the faculty board undertake concurrently any two degrees of this faculty which are specified together in part B of the schedule.


21. Reversion to one degree

21.1 A candidate undertaking two degrees concurrently may with the consent of the faculty board transfer to candidature for the degree of this faculty only or, where the degrees are both of this faculty, to one of those degrees only.

21.2 Where pursuant to subsection 21.1 a candidate transfers to candidature for one degree only, the faculty board must specify -

21.2.1 the units required to be completed by a candidate to qualify for the degree; and

21.2.2 the time within which the units must be completed.


22. Mode

Except as otherwise specified in the schedule in relation to the Bachelor of Business and Commerce, a degree of this faculty undertaken concurrently pursuant to this part must be undertaken on campus.


23. Time limits

A candidate -

23.1.1 undertaking a degree of this faculty concurrently with a degree of another faculty must complete the course of study for both degrees within the relevant time limits specified in part A of the schedule; and

23.1.2 undertaking concurrently two degrees of this faculty, must complete the course of study for both degrees in a minimum of four and a maximum of ten years.

Part 5 - Diploma

24.1 In this part "diploma" means the Diploma of Business.

24.2 The diploma must be undertaken pursuant to these regulations and by off-campus learning.


25. Time limits

Except where otherwise determined by the faculty board in any particular case, the course of study for the diploma must be completed in not less than two or more than four years.


26. Qualification

A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for the diploma qualifies for the diploma.
