Graduate and postgraduate diplomas regulations


Part 1 - General

1. Diplomas

The graduate and postgraduate diplomas that may be undertaken in the faculty are specified in schedule 1.


2. Interpretations

In these regulations, unless the contrary intention appears -

'approved' means approved by the faculty board;

'candidate' means a candidate for a graduate or postgraduate diploma;

'course of study' in relation to a graduate or postgraduate diploma means the course of study for the diploma as determined by the faculty board under these regulations;

'dean' means the dean of the faculty;

'executive certificate' means an executive certificate awarded by the faculty;

'faculty' means the Faculty of Business and Economics;

'faculty board' means the faculty board of the faculty;

'faculty information handout' means the faculty handbook or such other publication whether in bound, loose leaf or electronic form concerning a course of study as the faculty board determines from time to time;

'graduate diploma' means a graduate diploma specified in part A of schedule 1;

'postgraduate diploma' means a postgraduate diploma specified in part B of schedule 1.


3. Course of study

3.1 A course of study comprises subjects and other work as determined by the faculty board under this section.

3.2 The faculty board may from time to time, with the approval of the Academic Board, determine the subjects and other work comprising a course of study and may in relation to the subjects and other work determine any matter including but not limited to requirements concerning -

3.2.1 number, timing, content and duration;

3.2.2. attendance and participation;

3.2.3 assessment; and

3.2.4 satisfactory completion.

3.3 The faculty board must cause each determination under this section to be published in a faculty information handout.


4. Approval of work

Before enrolling in any year of a course of study, a candidate must obtain the dean's approval of the subjects and other work proposed to be undertaken by the candidate in that year and, unless otherwise authorised by the dean, the candidate must not undertake in that year any other subject or work in the course of study.


5. Credit for equivalent work

5.1 Subject to subsection 5.2, where it is expressed in schedule 1 that credit is allowable in respect of a graduate or postgraduate diploma, a candidate for the diploma who, not more than five years before admission to candidature, completed work which the dean is satisfied is equivalent to particular requirements of the relevant course of study, must be deemed to have completed those requirements and must be granted credit towards the diploma in respect of them.

5.2 Credit under subsection 5.1 may not be granted in respect of more than 50 per cent of the requirements of a course of study.

5.3 A candidate granted credit under subsection 5.1 must complete the relevant course of study within the time specified by the dean.


6. Time limits

6.1 Except where the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines or as otherwise provided in these regulations, a candidate must complete a course of study in -

6.1.1 a maximum of eight semesters; and

6.1.2 a minimum of two semesters of full-time or four semesters of part-time candidature.

6.2 A candidate for the Graduate Diploma in Accounting must complete the course of study in -

6.2.1 a maximum of twelve semesters; and

6.2.2 a minimum of three semesters of full-time or six semesters of part-time candidature.

6.3 Where a candidate has changed from one type of candidature to the other, the candidate must complete the course of study within the period determined by the dean with reference to the periods specified in this section.


7. Leave of absence

The faculty board may grant a candidate leave of absence for such periods and on such conditions as the board determines.


8. Submission of previous work

A candidate must not submit for a graduate or postgraduate diploma any work previously accepted or, except with the permission of the faculty board, previously submitted for an award of the university or of any other educational institution.


8A. Reversion from graduate diploma to graduate certificate

Where in schedule 2 a graduate certificate is specified in relation to a graduate diploma, a person who -

8A.1 in the course of candidature for the graduate diploma satisfies the requirements of the graduate certificate; and

8A.2 subsequently withdraws from candidature for the graduate diploma -
is qualified for the award of the graduate certificate.


9. Satisfactory completion

A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for a graduate or postgraduate diploma qualifies for that diploma.


10. Changes in regulations and course of study requirements

10.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the relevant course of study determined by the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published from time to time.

10.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for a graduate or postgraduate diploma, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit the candidate to qualify for the diploma under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study.

Part 2 - Admission to candidature


Division 1 - Graduate diplomas

11. General

11.1 Subject to the specific provisions of this division, to qualify for admission to candidature for a graduate diploma an applicant -

11.1.1 must -

11.1.1.1 have qualified for a degree of the university or of an approved educational institution or hold a qualification deemed equivalent by the faculty board; and

11.1.1.2 where in schedule 1, in relation to the graduate diploma, a number of years work experience is specified, have had a minimum of that number of years work experience and be currently or recently employed, in an area of work approved by the faculty board as relevant to the course of study for the particular graduate diploma; or

11.1.2 must have qualified for an executive certificate with an average grade of credit or above.

11.2 Despite the admission to candidature requirements of this division, the faculty board may, in any particular case, admit to candidature for a graduate diploma an applicant who has not satisfied the relevant admission requirements.


12. Graduate Diploma in Accounting

12.1 In the case of the Graduate Diploma in Accounting -

12.1.1 the degree referred to in subparagraph 11.1.1.1 must be a degree in a non - accounting discipline; and

12.1.2 paragraph 11.1.2 does not apply in relation to admission to candidature at the Clayton campus.


13. Graduate Diploma in Business Management

In the case of the Graduate Diploma in Business Management, to satisfy the requirements of paragraph 11.1.1 an applicant must also, to the satisfaction of the faculty board, have employer support necessary to satisfactorily complete the course of study.


14. Graduate Diploma in Economic Studies

In the case of the Graduate Diploma in Economic Studies -

14.1.1 to satisfy the requirements of paragraph 11.1.1 an applicant must also have satisfactorily completed units 3 and 4 of a Victorian Certificate of Education mathematics subject or hold a qualification deemed equivalent by the faculty board; and

14.1.2 paragraph 11.1.2 does not apply.


15. Graduate Diploma in Marketing

An applicant for admission to candidature for the Graduate Diploma in Marketing must, in addition to satisfying the admission requirements of one of the paragraphs of subsection 11.1, have also satisfactorily completed a statistical subject in the university or in an approved educational institution, or have completed other statistical work deemed equivalent by the faculty board.

Division 2 - Postgraduate diplomas

17.1 Subject to the specific provisions of this division, an applicant for admission to candidature for a postgraduate diploma must have qualified in the university or in an approved educational institution for a degree or hold a qualification deemed equivalent by the faculty board.

17.2 Despite the admission to candidature requirements of this division, the faculty board may, in any particular case, admit to candidature for a postgraduate diploma an applicant who has not satisfied the relevant admission requirements.


18. Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Accounting and Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management

18.1 In the case of -

18.1.1 the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Accounting, the degree referred to in subsection 17.1 must be a degree with a major in accounting; and

18.1.2 the Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management, the degree referred to in subsection 17.1 must be a degree with a major in accounting, banking or finance.

18.2 The faculty board may admit to candidature for the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Accounting or the Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management, an applicant who holds an approved professional qualification or a qualification deemed equivalent by the faculty board


19. Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce and Postgraduate Diploma in Economics

In the case of the Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce or the Postgraduate Diploma in Economics the degree referred to in subsection 17.1 must be a degree in the discipline of proposed study with an average grade of 70 per cent or above.


20. Postgraduate Diploma in Health Economics and Evaluation

In the case of the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Economics and Evaluation the degree referred to in subsection 17.1 must be a degree with a major in the discipline of economics.


21. Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing

In the case of the Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing the degree referred to in subsection 17.1 must be a degree with a major in marketing with an average grade of credit or above.
