Masters degrees


Part 1- General


1. Degrees

1.1 The masters degrees listed in Schedule 1 may be undertaken in the faculty pursuant to this part and Part I, II, III or IV, as the case requires.

1.2 The degree of Master of Education (Research) may be undertaken in the faculty pursuant to -

1.2.1 Part v of these regulations; and

1.2.2 the Masters Degrees by Research regulations of the Research Graduate School Committee.

1.3 In addition to a general degree, the degree of -

1.3.1 Master of Education may be undertaken in one of the specialties listed in Schedule 2; and

1.3.2 Master of Psychology may be undertaken in the specialty of -

  • Counselling; or

  • Educational and Developmental.

1.4 The title of a degree undertaken in a specialty includes the name of the specialty in brackets.


2. Interpretations

In these regulations unless the contrary intention appears -

"approved" means approved by the faculty board;

"candidate" means a candidate for a degree;

"course of study" means the course of study for a degree determined by the faculty board under these regulations;

"degree" in this part means a degree specified in Schedule 1;

"faculty" means the Faculty of Education;

"faculty board" means the faculty board of the faculty;

"faculty information handout" means a faculty handbook or such other publication concerning a course of study, whether bound, loose leaf or in electronic form, as the faculty board determines from time to time.


3. Course of study

3.1 Subject to the regulations, the faculty board may from time to time determine the requirements of a course of study and in relation to these requirements may determine any matter or thing including but not limited to -

3.1.1 number, content and duration;

3.1.2 sequence;

3.1.3 in relation to a thesis, form, supervision, submission and distribution;

3.1.4 candidate attendance and participation;

3.1.5 credit points;

3.1.6 assessment; and

3.1.7 satisfactory completion.

3.2 The faculty board may determine special requirements for or in relation to a course of study for the Master of Education undertaken in a specialty.

3.3 The faculty board must cause any determination under this section to be published in a faculty information handout.


4. Credit

4.1 Where the faculty board, on the recommendation of an associate dean (teaching) of the faculty, is satisfied that a candidate has completed work equivalent to particular requirements of the course of study for a degree, the faculty board may, subject to subsection 4.2, grant the candidate credit towards the degree in respect of that work.

4.2 Except where the faculty board in circumstances it deems exceptional otherwise determines, credit under subsection 4.1 must not be granted in respect of -

4.2.1 more than 50% of the work in a course of study; or

4.2.2 work completed more than 10 years before admission to candidature.

4.3 A candidate granted credit under this section must complete the course of study in the time specified by the faculty board.


5. English language requirement

In addition to the specific admission requirements for each degree, an applicant for admission to candidature must satisfy the English language requirements specified by the faculty board and published in a faculty information handout.


6. Mode of candidature

6.1 Except as otherwise provided in the regulations, candidature -

6.1.1 must be continuous; and

6.1.2 may be full-time or part-time.

6.2 A course of study undertaken by an international student must be undertaken by full-time candidature.


7. Intermission

The faculty board may, from time to time and subject to any conditions specified, grant a candidate leave of absence, but for no more than twelve months in total, unless the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines.


8. Award

A candidate who satisfactorily completes a course of study qualifies for the award of the relevant degree.


9. Compliance

9.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the relevant course of study requirements determined by the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published from time to time.

9.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for a degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the faculty board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study.

10. Degrees

In this part, except where otherwise expressly provided, "degree" means the degree of -

  • Master in Applied Linguistics for Language Teachers

  • Master of Education

  • Master in Organisational Leadership

  • Master of Teaching -

    as the case requires.


11. Admission to candidature

11.1 Subject to subsection 11.2, an applicant for admission to candidature for a degree must have qualified for an approved -

11.1.1 three year bachelors degree in a relevant field with an average grade of credit in the final year;

11.1.2 three year bachelors degree and fourth year of study; or

11.1.3 four year bachelors degree -
or have other qualifications or experience deemed equivalent by the faculty board.

11.2 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master in Applied Linguistics for Language Teachers must have qualified for an approved three year bachelors degree with an average grade of credit in the final year.


12. Course of study

A course of study may comprise -

12.1.1 units only;

12.1.2 units and a professional project; or

12.1.3 units and a thesis.


13. Time limits

The course of study must be completed in a minimum of 1.5 years and a maximum of 5 years.


14. Reversion

14.1 A candidate for a degree, other than the Master of Teaching, who withdraws from candidature after satisfactorily completing -

14.1.1 in one semester of full-time candidature or equivalent, the necessary units for the related graduate or postgraduate certificate, is qualified for the award of that certificate; or

14.1.2 in two semesters of full-time candidature or equivalent, the necessary units for the related graduate or post graduate diploma, is qualified for the award of that diploma -
where appropriate, in the case of the Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma of Education, in the relevant specialty listed in Schedule 2.

14.2 For the purposes of this section, the degrees and related graduate or postgraduate certificates and diplomas are as set out in Schedule 3.

Part 111 - Master in Counselling

Master in Mentoring and Coaching

Master in School Leadership


15. Degrees

In this part, except where otherwise expressly provided, "degree" means the degree of -

  • Master in Counselling

  • Master in Mentoring and Coaching

  • Master in School Leadership

as the case requires.


16. Admission to candidature

An applicant for admission to candidature must have qualified for an approved -

16.1 four year bachelors degree; or

16.1.2 three year bachelors degree and have approved work experience-
or have other qualifications or experience deemed equivalent by the faculty board.


17. Course of study

The course of study is comprised of units.


18. Time limits

The course of study must be completed in a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 4 years.


19. Reversion

A candidate for the degree of Master in Mentoring and Coaching who withdraws from candidature after satisfactorily completing one semester of full-time candidature or equivalent, is qualified for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate in Mentoring and Coaching.

Part 1V - Master of Psychology


20. Degree

In this part "degree" means the degree of Master of Psychology.


21. Admission to candidature

An applicant for admission to candidature must have satisfactorily completed four years study in psychology approved by the Australian Psychological Society.


22. Course of study

The course of study is comprised of -

22.1.1 units;

22.1.2 supervised practical work; and

22.1.3 a thesis.


23. Time limits

The course of study must be completed in a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 6 years.


24. Alternate qualification

A candidate for the degree in the Counselling stream, who withdraws from candidature after satisfying the unit requirements of the degree, is qualified for the award of the Master in Counselling.

Part V - Master of Education (Research)


25. Degree

In this part "degree" means the degree of Master of Education (Research).


26. Admission to candidature

An applicant for admission to candidature must, in this or another university, have satisfactorily completed four years of study in -

26.1.1 education; or

26.1.2 a related field -

approved by the faculty board.


27. Study program

A study program must comprise -

27.1.1 a thesis (100%); or

27.1.2 a thesis (2/3) and units (1/3).


28. Credit

Where, in respect of a candidate undertaking a study program including units, the faculty board, on the recommendation of the associate dean (research) of the faculty, is satisfied that the candidate has satisfactorily completed work equivalent to any particular unit requirement of the study program, the faculty board may, subject to the Masters Degrees by Research regulations, grant the candidate credit towards the degree in respect of that work.


29. International students

A course of study undertaken by an international student must be undertaken by full-time candidature.
