Regulations
Undergraduate degrees
1. Degrees
1.1 The degrees listed in schedule 1 may be undertaken in the faculty
pursuant to these regulations.
1.2 The degree of Bachelor of Education must be undertaken as a double
degree pursuant to section 9.
1.3 The degree of Bachelor of Educational Studies may be undertaken in
the specialty of Special Education and, where so undertaken, the title
of the degree includes the specialty in brackets.
2. Interpretations
In these regulations, unless the contrary intention appears -
"associate dean (teaching)" means an associate dean (teaching)
of the faculty;
"candidate" means a candidate for a degree;
"course of study" means the course of study for a degree determined
by the faculty board under these regulations;
"dean" means the dean of the faculty;
"degree" means a degree of the faculty listed in schedule 1;
"faculty" means the Faculty of Education;
"faculty board" means the faculty board of the faculty;
"faculty information handout" means a faculty handbook or
such other publication concerning a course of study, whether bound or
loose leaf or on-line or in other electronic form, as the faculty board
determines from time to time.
3. Course of study
3.1 A course of study comprises the subjects determined by the faculty
board under this section.
3.2 The faculty board may from time to time, with the approval of the
Academic Board, determine the subjects comprising the course of study
for a degree and may in relation to the subjects determine any matter
including but not limited to requirements concerning -
3.2.1 number, timing, content and duration;
3.2.2 teaching placements;
3.2.3 attendance and participation;
3.2.4 credit points;
3.2.5 assessment; and
3.2.6 satisfactory completion.
3.3 The faculty board may determine special requirements in relation
to the course of study for a degree undertaken pursuant to these regulations
concurrently with the course of study for another degree.
3.4 The faculty board must cause each determination under this section
to be published in a faculty information handout.
3.5 Except where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines,
a candidate in any year of a course of study may only undertake the units
determined by the faculty board for that particular year.
4.Credit
4.1 Where the faculty board, on the recommendation of an associate dean
(teaching), is satisfied that a candidate has completed work equivalent
to particular requirements of the course of study for a degree, the faculty
board may grant the candidate credit towards the degree in respect of
that work, provided that the candidate must complete a minimum of -
4.1.1 one year of the course of study; or
4.1.2 in the case of the degree of Bachelor of Education (Honours), 50%
of the work in the course of study.
4.2 Except where the faculty board in circumstances it deems exceptional
otherwise determines, credit under this section must not be granted in
respect of work completed more than 10 years before admission to candidature.
4.3 A candidate granted credit under this section must complete the course
of study in the time specified by the faculty board.
5. Candidature
5.1 Subject to the regulations, candidature for a degree must be continuous.
5.2 A candidate, with the approval of the dean, may undertake candidature
for all or any part of a course of study as a part-time candidate.
6. Time limits
Except as otherwise provided in the regulations or as otherwise determined
by the faculty board in any particular case, a candidate for a degree
listed in schedule 1 or for a double degree pursuant to section 9, must
complete the course of study for the one or both degrees (as the case
requires) in -
6.1.1 a minimum of four and a maximum of ten years; or
6.1.2 in the case of -
6.1.2.1 the degree of Bachelor of Adult Learning and Development , Bachelor
of Early Childhood Studies or Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation,
a minimum of three and a maximum of ten years;
6.1.2.2 the degree of Bachelor of Education (Honours), a minimum of one
and a maximum of two years; or
6.1.2.3 the double degree of Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Laws,
a minimum of five and a half and a maximum of 13 years.
7. Intermission
The dean may, subject to any conditions specified, grant a candidate
leave of absence, but in no case for more than 12 months in total unless
the dean in any particular case otherwise determines.
8. Single units
8.1 The faculty board, on the recommendation of an associate dean (teaching),
may permit a person who is not a candidate to enrol for one or more units
in a course of study.
8.2 A person who satisfactorily completes a unit pursuant to subsection
8.1 and is subsequently admitted to candidature for the relevant degree,
must be given credit for that unit.
9. Double degrees
A candidate may -
9.1.1 with the consent of the faculty board, undertake the double degree
of Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation;
or
9.1.2 with the consent of the faculty board of this faculty and of the
other faculty concerned, undertake -
9.1.2.1 the Bachelor of Education as a double degree with any one of
the degrees specified in schedule 2; or
9.1.2.2 the double degree of Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation
and Bachelor of Business and Commerce.
10. Reversion to one degree
10.1 A candidate undertaking a double degree pursuant to these regulations
who wishes to transfer to candidature for one degree only may, with the
consent of the faculty board -
10.1.1 in the case of a double degree with the degree of Bachelor of
Education, transfer to candidature for the degree of Bachelor of Primary
Education or Bachelor of Secondary Education; or
10.1.2 in the case of the double degree of Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor
Recreation and Bachelor of Business and Commerce, transfer to candidature
for the degree of Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation.
10.2 Where a candidate transfers from a double degree to one degree only,
the faculty board must specify -
10.2.1 the work required to be completed by the candidate to qualify
for the award of the degree; and
10.2.2 the time within which the work must be completed.
11. Award
11.1 Subject to this section, a candidate who satisfactorily completes
the course of study for a degree is qualified for the award of the degree.
11.2 A candidate for a double degree is not eligible for an award under
these regulations until both degrees have been satisfactorily completed.
12.
Compliance
12.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations
and with the requirements concerning the relevant course of study determined
by the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published
from time to time.
12.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first
enrolling for a degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change
in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board
must permit the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations
or course of study requirements in force or published at sometime during
candidature, provided the faculty board is satisfied that the work so
required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently
required to complete the course of study.
