Graduate and Post Graduate Diplomas
1. Diplomas
1.1 The graduate and postgraduate diplomas listed in Schedule 1 may
be undertaken pursuant to these regulations.
1.2 The Postgraduate Diploma of Education may be undertaken as a general
diploma or in one of the specialties listed in Schedule 2.
1.3 Where the Postgraduate Diploma of Education is undertaken in a specialty,
the title of the diploma includes the name of the specialty in brackets.
2. Interpretations
In these regulations unless the contrary intention appears -
"approved" means approved by the faculty board;
"candidate" means a candidate for a diploma;
"course of study" means the course of study for a diploma determined
by the faculty board under these regulations;
"diploma" means a graduate or postgraduate diploma specified
in subsection 1.1;
"faculty" means the Faculty of Education;
"faculty board" means the faculty board of the faculty;
"faculty information handout" means a faculty handbook or such
other publication concerning a course of study, whether bound, loose
leaf or in electronic form, as the faculty board determines from time to time.
3. Course of study
3.1 Subject to subsection 3.2, the course of study for a diploma is
comprised of units.
3.2 The course of study for -
- the Graduate Diploma of
Education (Early Childhood)
- the Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary)
- the Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary)
3.3 Subject to these regulations, the faculty board may from time to
time determine the requirements of a course of study and in relation
to these requirements may determine any matter or thing including but
not limited to -
3.3.1 number, content and duration;
3.3.2 sequence;
3.3.3 candidate attendance and participation;
3.3.4 credit points;
3.3.5 assessment; and
3.3.6 satisfactory completion.
3.4 The faculty board may determine special
requirements for or in relation to a course of study for the Postgraduate
Diploma of Education undertaken in a specialty.
3.5 The faculty
board must cause any determination under this section to be published in
a faculty information handout.
4. Admission to candidature
4.1 Applicant for admission to candidature must satisfy -
4.1.1 the requirements specified in this paragraph in relation to the
particular diploma:
4.1.1.1 Graduate Diploma of Education (Computers in Education)
- Graduate Diploma of Education (Professional Development Studies)
- an approved
degree or diploma; or
- an approved teaching qualification -
or other qualifications or experience deemed equivalent or a satisfactory
substitute by the faculty board
4.1.1.2 Graduate Diploma of Education (Early Childhood)
- Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary)
- Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary)
- an approved bachelors degree or
other qualifications deemed equivalent by the faculty board; and
the applicant must, in the opinion of the faculty board, be satisfactorily
prepared for the course of study.
4.1.1.3 Postgraduate Diploma of Education Postgraduate Diploma in Organisational
Leadership -
- an approved three year bachelors degree and fourth year of
study; or
- an approved four year bachelors degree -
or other qualifications or experience deemed equivalent or a satisfactory
substitute by the faculty board.
4.1.1.4 Postgraduate Diploma of Psychology -
- a bachelors degree that includes a major sequence in psychology approved
by the Australian Psychological Society; and
4.1.2 the English language requirements specified by the faculty board
and published in a faculty information handout.
5. Credit
5.1 Where the faculty board, on the recommendation of an associate dean
(teaching) of the faculty, is satisfied that a candidate has completed
work equivalent to particular requirements of the course of study for
a diploma, the faculty board may, subject to subsection 5.2, grant the
candidate credit towards the diploma in respect of that work.
5.2 Except where the faculty board in circumstances it deems exceptional
otherwise determines, credit under subsection 5.1 must not be granted
in respect of -
5.2.1 more than 50% of the work in a course of study; or
5.2.2 work completed more than 10 years before admission to candidature.
5.3 A candidate granted credit under this section must complete the course
of study in the time specified by the faculty board.
6. Mode of Candidature
6.1 Except as otherwise provided in the regulations, candidature -
6.1.1 must be continuous; and
6.1.2 may be full-time or part-time.
6.2 A course of study undertaken by an international student must be
undertaken by full-time candidature.
7. Time limits
Except as otherwise provided in the regulations, a course of study must
be completed in a minimum of one year and a maximum of four years.
8. Intermission
Except as otherwise provided in the regulations, a course of study must
be completed in a minimum of one year and a maximum of four years.
9. Reversion
A candidate who withdraws from candidature for -
the Postgraduate Diploma
of Education; or
the Postgraduate Diploma in Organisational Leadership -
after satisfactorily completing, in one semester of full-time candidature
or equivalent, the necessary units for the Postgraduate Certificate of
Education or the Postgraduate Certificate in Organisational Leadership,
is qualified for the award of the relevant postgraduate certificate.
10. Award
A candidate who satisfactorily completes a course of study qualifies
for the award of the relevant diploma.
11. Compliance
11.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations
and with the relevant course of study requirements determined by the
faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published from
time to time.
11.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first
enrolling for a diploma, been unreasonably adversely affected by any
changes in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty
board must permit the candidate to qualify for the diploma under the
regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at
some time during candidature, provided the faculty board is satisfied
that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to
that currently required to complete the course of study.
