Graduate and Postgraduate Certificates


1. Certificates

1.1 The following graduate and postgraduate certificates may be undertaken pursuant to these regulations:

  • Graduate Certificate of Education (Professional Development Studies)

  • Graduate Certificate in Higher Education

  • Postgraduate Certificate of Education

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Mentoring and Coaching

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Organisational Leadership

1.2 The Postgraduate Certificate of Education may be undertaken as a general certificate or in one of the specialties listed in the schedule.

1.3 Where the Postgraduate Certificate of Education is undertaken in a specialty, the title of the certificate includes the name of the specialty in brackets.


2. Interpretations

In these regulations unless the contrary intention appears -

"approved" means approved by the faculty board;

"candidate" means a candidate for a certificate;

"certificate" means a graduate or postgraduate certificate specified in subsection 1.1;

"course of study" means the course of study for a certificate determined by the faculty board under these regulations;

"faculty" means the Faculty of Education;

"faculty board" means the faculty board of the faculty;

"faculty information handout" means a faculty handbook or such other publication concerning a course of study,

whether bound, loose leaf or in electronic form, as the faculty board determines from time to time.


3. Course of study

3.1 The course of study for a certificate is comprised of units.

3.2 Subject to these regulations, the faculty board may from time to time determine the requirements of a course of study and in relation to these requirements may determine any matter or thing including but not limited to -

3.2.1 number, content and duration;

3.2.2 sequence;

3.2.3 candidate attendance and participation;

3.2.4 credit points;

3.2.5 assessment; and

3.2.6 satisfactory completion.

3.3 The faculty board may determine special requirements for or in relation to a course of study undertaken in a specialty.

3.4 The faculty board must cause any determination under this section to be published in a faculty information handout.


4. Admission to candidature

An applicant for admission to candidature for a certificate must satisfy -

4.1.1 the requirements specified in this paragraph in relation to the particular certificate:

4.1.1.1 Graduate Certificate of Education (Professional Development Studies)

  • a degree or diploma, or other qualifications or experience deemed equivalent or a satisfactory substitute by the faculty board;

4.1.1.2 Graduate Certificate in High Education -

  • a degree; and

  • active engagement in teaching in a higher educational institution;

4.1.1.3 Postgraduate Certificate of Education

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Organisational Leadership -

  • an approved three year bachelors degree in a relevant field with an average grade of credit in the final year;

  • an approved three year bachelors degree and fourth year of study; or

  • or an approved four year bachelors degree -

or other qualifications or experience deemed equivalent or a satisfactory substitute by the faculty board; and

4.1.1.4 Postgraduate Certificate in Mentoring and Coaching -

  • an approved four year bachelors degree; or

  • an approved three year bachelors degree and approved work experience;

or other qualifications or experience deemed equivalent by the faculty board; and

4.1.2 the English language requirements specified by the faculty board and published in a faculty information handout.


5. Mode of candidature

5.1 Except as otherwise provided in the regulations candidature for a certificate -

5.1.1 must be continuous; and

5.1.2 may be undertaken full-time or part-time.

5.2 A course of study undertaken by an international student must be undertaken by full-time candidature.


6. Credit

6.1 Where the faculty board, on the recommendation of an associate dean (teaching) of the faculty, is satisfied that a candidate has completed work equivalent to particular requirements of the course of study for a certificate, the faculty board may, subject to subsection 6.2, grant the candidate credit towards the certificate in respect of that work.

6.2 Except where the faculty board in circumstances it deems exceptional otherwise determines, credit under subsection 6.1 must not be granted in respect of -

6.2.1 more than 50% of the work in a course of study; or

6.2.2 work completed more than 10 years before admission to candidature.

6.3 A candidate granted credit under this section must complete the course of study in the time specified by the faculty board.


7. Time limits

Except where the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines, a course of study must be completed in a minimum of one semester and a maximum of three years.


8. Intermission

The faculty board may, from time to time and subject to any conditions specified, grant a candidate leave of absence, but for no more than twelve months in total, unless the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines.


9. Award

A candidate who satisfactorily completes a course of study qualifies the award of the relevant certificate.


10. Compliance

10.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the relevant course of study requirements determined by the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published from time to time.

10.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for a certificate, been unreasonably adversely affected by any changes in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit the candidate to qualify for the certificate under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the faculty board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study.
