1. Masters Degrees The masters degrees listed in Schedule I may be undertaken in the faculty pursuant to these regulations.
In these regulations, unless the contrary intention appears - "candidate" means a candidate for a degree; "course of study" means the course of study for a degree determined by the faculty board under these regulations; "dean" means the dean of the faculty; "degree" means a masters degree specified in the Schedule; "faculty board" means the faculty board of the faculty; "faculty information handout" means a faculty handbook or such other publication concerning a course of study, whether bound or loose leaf or on line or in other electronic form, as the faculty board determines from time to time. 3.1 A course of study consists of one or more of the following, as determined by the faculty board under this section -
3.2 The faculty board may from time to time determine the thesis, unit and project requirements, as appropriate, of a course of study and in relation to these may determine any matter or thing including but not limited to - 3.2.1 number, timing, content and duration; 3.2.2 attendance and participation; 3.2.3 assessment; 3.2.4 satisfactory completion; and 3.2.5 in relation to a thesis - form, supervision, submission and distribution. 3.3 The faculty must cause each determination under subsection 3.2 to be published in a faculty information handout.
4.1 In addition to the specific admission requirements for a degree, an applicant for admission to candidature must, to the satisfaction of the faculty board, be adequately prepared for the course of study concerned. 4.2 The faculty board may, in circumstances it deems exceptional, admit to candidature for a degree an applicant who - 4.2.1 has qualified for the pass degree of Bachelor of Engineering only, where required in the relevant or a related field, despite a degree with honours requirement; or 4.2.2 does not satisfy the prescribed requirements for admission. 5.1 Except where otherwise expressly provided, credit may be granted towards a degree in respect of a maximum 25% of the work in a course of study. 5.2 Credit under this section may be granted only in respect of work - 5.2.1 which the faculty board is satisfied is equivalent to or a satisfactory substitute for work in the course of study concerned; 5.2.2 completed before or during candidature and not more than ten years before admission to candidature; and 5.2.3 which has not been presented for any other award. 5.3 A candidate granted credit towards a degree must complete the course of study in the time specified by the dean.
Except where otherwise expressly provided, a course of study must be completed in a minimum of one and a maximum of 10 years.
7 .1 Except where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines, t he dean may grant a candidate intermission for a maximum 12 months in total, subject to any conditions specified. 7 . 2 Intermission under this section does not affect the prescribed time limits for the degree concerned.
9.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the relevant course of study determined by the faculty board, as in force or published from time to time. 9.2 Where the faculty board considers that the candidate has, since first enrolling for a degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the faculty board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study. Part II - Specific
10 .1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Aerospace Engineering must have qualified in the university for the Bachelor of Engineering in the field of Mechanical Engineering with honours or have other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute. 10 .2 Credit must not be granted towards the degree.
11.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Biomedical Engineering must have qualified in the university for - 11.1.1 the Bachelor of Engineering with honours or have other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute; or 11.1.2 the Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Engineering. 11.1.2 A candidate who - 11.2.1 has qualified for admission under paragraph 11.1.1; and 11.2.2 withdraws from candidature after satisfactorily completing the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Engineering - is qualified for the award of that graduate certificate.
12.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering must have qualified in the university for - 12.1.1 the Bachelor of Engineering in the field of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering with honours or have other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute; or 12.1.2 the Postgraduate Diploma in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering. 12.2 A candidate who - 12.21 has qualified for admission under paragraph 12.1.1; and 12.2.2 withdraws from candidature after satisfactorily completing the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering - is qualified for the award of that graduate certificate. 13.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Engineering Science (Coursework and Minor Thesis) must have qualified in the university for the Bachelor of Engineering with honours, or have other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute. 13.2 Where an applicant satisfies the admission requirements of this section but, in the opinion of the faculty board, is not adequately prepared for the course of study, the faculty board may admit the applicant to preliminary candidature. 13.3 A preliminary candidate who satisfies the requirements of preliminary candidature specified by the faculty board must be admitted to full candidature. 13.4 The faculty board may permit a preliminary candidate to enrol concurrently for units in the course of study and, if subsequently admitted to full candidature, the candidate must be given full credit for any such units satisfactorily completed. 13.5 The faculty board may grant credit only in circumstances it deems exceptional.
14.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Engineering Science in Advanced Process Design must have qualified in the university for the Bachelor of Engineering with honours, or have other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute. 14.2 The faculty board may grant credit towards the degree only in circumstances it deems exceptional. 14.3 A candidate who withdraws from candidature after satisfactorily completing the requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Process Design is qualified for the award of that postgraduate diploma.
15.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Infrastructure Engineering and Management must have qualified in the university for - 15.1.1 the degree of Bachelor of Engineering or have other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute; or 15.1.2 the Postgraduate Diploma in Infrastructure Engineering and Management with a minimum average grade of 65%. 15.2 The faculty board may grant a candidate who has qualified for admission under paragraph 15.1.2, credit in respect of 50% of the work in the course of study for the postgraduate diploma. 15.3 A candidate who - 15.3.1 has qualified for admission under paragraph 15.1.1; and 15.3.2 withdraws from candidature after satisfactorily completing the requirements of the Postgraduate Diploma in Infrastructure Engineering and Management - is qualified for the award of that postgraduate diploma.
16.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Maintenance and Reliability Engineering must have qualified in the university for - 16.1.1 the Bachelor of Engineering with honours or have other qualifications and experience which the faculty board is satisfied are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute; or 16.1.2 the Graduate Diploma in Engineering Maintenance Management with minimum average grade of 65%. 16.2 The faculty board may grant a candidate who has qualified for admission under paragraph 16.1.2, credit in respect of 50% of the work in the course of study for the graduate diploma. 16.3 A candidate who - 16.3.1 has qualified for admission under paragraph 16.1.1; and 16.3.2 withdraws from candidature after satisfactorily completing the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Maintenance Managementorthe Graduate Certificate in Reliability Engineering - is qualified for the award of the relevant graduate certificate.
17.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Materials Engineering must have qualified in the university for - 17.1.1 the degree of Bachelor of Engineering or have other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute; or 17.1.2 the Postgraduate Diploma in Materials Engineering with a minimum average grade of 65%. 17.2 The faculty board may grant a candidate who has qualified for admission to candidature under paragraph 17.1.2, full credit for work in the course of study for the post graduate diploma. 17.3 A candidate who - 17.3.1 has qualified for admission under paragraph 17.1.1; and 17.3.2 withdraws from candidature after satisfactorily completing the requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma in Materials Engineering - is qualified for the award of that postgraduate diploma.
18.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Telecommunication Engineering must have qualified in the university for - 18.1.1 for the degree of Bachelor of Engineering in the field of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering with honours, or have other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute; or 18.1.2 the Postgraduate Diploma in Telecommunication Engineering. 18.2 The faculty board may grant a candidate who has qualified for admission under paragraph 18.1.2 credit in respect of 25% of the work in the course of study for the postgraduate diploma. 18.3 A candidate who - 18.3.1 has qualified for admission under paragraph 18.1.1; and 18.3.2 withdraws from candidature after satisfactorily completing the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Telecommunication Engineering - is qualified for the award of that graduate certificate.
Master of Transport 19.1 In this section "degree", where not otherwise specified, means the degree of Master of Traffic or Master of Transport or both, as the case requires. 19.2 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree must have qualified in the university for - 19.2.1 the degree of Bachelor of Engineering or have other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute; 19.2.2 the Postgraduate Diploma in Transport and Traffic with a minimum average grade of 65%; or 19.2.3 in the case of - 19.2.3.1 the Master of Traffic, the Master of Transport; and 19.2.3.2 the Master of Transport, the Master of Traffic. 19.3 The faculty board may grant a candidate who has qualified for admission under paragraph 19.2.2 or 19.2.3, credit in respect of 50% of the work in the course of study for the postgraduate diploma or the relevant masters degree, as the case requires. 19.4 A candidate who - 19.4.1 has qualified for admission under paragraph 19.2.1; and 19.4.2 withdraws from candidature after satisfactorily completing the requirements of the Postgraduate Diploma in Transport and Traffic Engineering - is qualified for the award of that postgraduate diploma.
