Faculty of Engineering regulations
Undergraduate degrees
1. Interpretation
In these regulations, unless a contrary intention appears -
“candidate” means a candidate for a degree;
“course of study” means a course of study for a degree;
“dean” means the dean of the faculty;
“degree” means a degree listed in Schedule 1;
“faculty” means the Faculty of Engineering;
“faculty board” means the faculty board of the faculty;
“faculty information handout” means a faculty handbook or such other
publication concerning a course of study, whether bound, loose leaf or
in electronic form, as the faculty board determines from time to time.
2. Degrees
2.1 A degree listed in -
2.1.1 Part A of Schedule 1 may be undertaken as a pass degree
or a degree with honours; and
2.1.2 Part B of Schedule 1 may be undertaken as a pass degree
only.
2.2 The degree of Bachelor of Engineering must be undertaken in one
of the following fields-
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering
- Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management
- Materials Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mechatronics Engineering.
3. Course of study
3.1 The course of study for a degree comprises
units as determined by the faculty board under this section.
3.2 The faculty board may from time to time determine the units
comprising a course of study and may, in relation to the units, determine
any matter including but not limited to requirements concerning -
3.2.1 number, timing, content and duration;
3.2.2 prerequisite and corequisite units and prohibited combinations;
3.2.3 attendance and participation;
3.2.4 credit points;
3.2.5 assessment; and
3.2.6 satisfactory completion.
3.3 The faculty board may determine -
3.3.1 work experience requirements for a degree; and
3.3.2 special requirements for or in relation to the course of
study for a degree undertaken pursuant to these regulations concurrently
with the course of study for a degree of another faculty.
3.4 The faculty board must cause each determination under this
section to be published in a faculty information handout.
4. Time limits
4.1 Except where the dean in any particular case otherwise
determines and subject to subsection 4.2, the course of study for a degree
-
4.1.1 listed in Part A of Schedule 1 must be completed in a minimum
of four and a maximum of eight years; and
4.1.2 listed in Part B of Schedule 1 must be completed in a minimum
of three and a maximum of six years.
4.2 The dean may determine particular time limits for a candidate
granted credit under section 5 or 6.
5. Single units
5.1 The faculty board may permit a person who is not a candidate to enrol for one or more units in a course of study.
5.2 A person who -
5.2.1 satisfactorily completes a unit pursuant to subsection 5.1; and
5.2.2 is subsequently admitted to candidature for the degree concerned
-
must, subject to these regulations, be granted credit for the unit.
6. Equivalent Work
6.1 A candidate for a degree who, prior to candidature, completed work which the dean is satisfied is equivalent to particular requirements of the candidate’s course of study, must be deemed to have completed those requirements and, subject to these regulations, be granted credit in respect of them.
6.2 The faculty board may determine limits on the amount of credit that may be granted under this section and any such determination must be published in a faculty information handout.
7. Credit time limit
Except in circumstances the dean deems exceptional, credit under these regulations must not be granted in respect of a unit completed more than 10 years before admission to candidature.
8. Outside work
8.1 The dean may, subject to any conditions specified, authorise a candidate to undertake, in another faculty or in another educational institution, work which the dean is satisfied is equivalent to work in a candidate’s course of study.
8.2 A candidate who satisfactorily completes work authorised under this section must be granted credit in respect of the equivalent work in the course of study.
9. Intermission
9.1 The dean may, subject to any conditions specified, grant a candidate intermission for a maximum of one year in total, unless the dean in any particular case otherwise determines.
9.2 Intermission under this section does not affect the prescribed time limits for the degree concerned.
10. Double degrees
10.1 A candidate may, with the approval of the faculty board of this faculty and of the other faculty concerned, undertake a degree of this faculty specified in Part A of Schedule 2 concurrently with one of the degrees specified in Part B of the schedule in relation to the degree of this faculty.
10.2 Except where the dean in any particular case otherwise determines,
where two degrees are undertaken concurrently, the course of study for both
degrees must be completed in a minimum of five and a maximum of 10 years provided
that, in the case of the double degree of -
10.2.1 Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Laws; or
10.2.2 Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering and Bachelor of Laws -
the course of study for both degrees must be completed in a minimum of six
and a maximum of 12 years.
11. Reversion
11.1 A candidate undertaking a double degree may, with
the consent of the faculty board, transfer to candidature for the degree of
this faculty only.
11.2 Where pursuant to subsection 11.1 a candidate transfers to candidature
for the degree of this faculty only, the faculty board must specify –
11.2.1 the work required to be completed by the candidate to qualify
for the degree; and
11.2.2 the time within which the work must be completed.
12. Qualification
12.1 A candidate who satisfies the requirements of a degree is qualified for the award of the degree and, in the case of the degree with honours, with honours of the grade determined by the faculty board in accordance with subsection 12.2.
12.2 A degree with honours may be awarded in one of the following grades:
12.3 A candidate for a double degree is not eligible for an award
under these regulations until both degrees have been satisfactorily completed.
13. Compliance
13.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the relevant course of study determined by the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published from time to time.
13.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for a degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the faculty board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study.
