Graduate and Postgraduate diplomas
Part I - General
1. Diplomas
1.1 Graduate diplomas in a field of study listed in Schedule A,
and postgraduate diplomas in a field of study listed in Schedule B, may
be undertaken in the faculty pursuant to these regulations.
1.2 The
title of a graduate or postgraduate diploma is "Graduate
Diploma in or "Postgraduate Diploma in" (as the case
requires) followed by the name of the relevant field of study.
2. Interpretation
In these regulations, unless a contrary intention appears -
"candidate" means a candidate for a diploma;
"course of study" means the course of study for a graduate
or postgraduate diploma (as the case requires) determined by the faculty
board under these regulations;
"diploma" means a graduate or postgraduate diploma;
"faculty board" means
the faculty board of the faculty;
"faculty information handout" means a faculty handbook
or such other publication, whether bound or loose leaf or on-line or
in other electronic form, concerning a course of study as the faculty
board determines from time to time;
"graduate diploma" means a graduate diploma in a field
of study listed in
Schedule A;
"postgraduate diploma" means the postgraduate diploma in
a field of study listed in Schedule B;
"recognised" means recognised by the faculty board.
3. Admission to candidature
In addition to the
specific admission to candidature provisions for a particular diploma,
an applicant for admission to candidature must, to the satisfaction of
the faculty board, be suitably prepared for the relevant course of study.
4. Course of study
4.1 The course of study for a diploma comprises units and practical
and project work, determined by the faculty board under this section.
4.2 The faculty board may from time to time determine the units and
practical and project work comprising a course of study and in relation
to these may determine any matter including, but not limited to -
4.2.1 number, timing, content and duration;
4.2.2 candidate attendance and participation;
4.2.3 credit points;
4.2.4 assessment; and
4.2.5 satisfactory completion.
4.3 The faculty board must cause each determination under this section
to be published in the faculty information handout.
5. Credit
5.1 Where the faculty board is satisfied that a candidate has completed
work equivalent to or a satisfactory substitute for particular work in
the candidate’s course of study, the faculty board may grant the
candidate credit in respect of that particular work.
5.2 Subject to subsection 5.3 and any specific provision
in Part II, credit under this section must not be granted in respect
of -
5.2.1 more than 25% of the work in a course of study;
5.2.2 work completed more than 10 years before admission to candidature;
or
5.2.3 work that has been presented towards any other award of the university
or of any other educational institution.
5.3 A candidate for a diploma in a particular field
of study who has qualified for a graduate certificate in the same field
of study may be granted full credit for the work in the course of study
for the graduate certificate.
6. Time limits
6.1 Except where the faculty board in any particular case otherwise
determines, the course of study for a diploma must be completed in a
minimum of one and a maximum of ten years.
6.2 Where credit is granted to a candidate under these regulations,
the candidate must complete the course of study within the time specified
by the dean.
7. Qualification
A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for a
diploma is qualified for the award of the diploma.
8. Compliance
8.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations
and with the requirements concerning the course of study determined by
the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published from
time to time.
8.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first
enrolling for a diploma, been unreasonably adversely affected by any
change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty
board must permit the candidate to qualify for the diploma under the
regulations in force or published at some time during candidature, provided
that the board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed
is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the
relevant course of study.

Part II - Specific
9. Graduate Diploma in Engineering Maintenance Management
9.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the Graduate Diploma
in
Engineering Maintenance Management must have qualified -
9.1.1 in the university or in another recognised educational
institution for a degree or diploma in an engineering discipline; or
9.1.2 in the university for the Graduate Certificate
in Maintenance Management, or the Graduate Diploma in Reliability Engineering,
with a minimum average grade of 65% -
or have other qualifications which
the faculty board is satisfied are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute.
9.2 A candidate who -
9.2.1 has not qualified for admission under paragraph 9.1.2; and
9.2.2 withdraws from candidature after satisfactorily completing the
requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Maintenance Management or
the Graduate Certificate in Reliability Engineering -
is qualified for the award of the relevant graduate certificate.
10. Graduate Diploma in Materials Engineering
An applicant for admission to candidature for the Graduate Diploma
in Materials Engineering must have -
10.1.1 qualified in the university or in another recognised educational
institution for a degree or diploma in an engineering discipline; or
10.1.2 other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are
equivalent or a satisfactory substitute.
11. Graduate Diploma in Pulp and Paper Technology
An applicant for admission to candidature for the Graduate Diploma
in Pulp and Paper Technology must have -
11.1.1 qualified in the university or in another recognised educational
institution for a degree or diploma in an engineering discipline; or
11.1.2 other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are
equivalent or a satisfactory substitute.
12. Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Engineering
12.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the Postgraduate
Diploma in Biomedical Engineering must have qualified in the university
for -
12.1.1 the Bachelor of Engineering; or
12.1.2 the Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Engineering -
or have other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are
equivalent or a satisfactory substitute.
12.2 A candidate who -
12.2.1 has not qualified for admission under paragraph 12.1.2; and
12.2.2 withdraws from candidature after satisfactorily completing the
requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Engineering -
is qualified for the award of that graduate certificate.
13. Postgraduate Diploma in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering
13.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the Postgraduate
Diploma in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering must have qualified
in the university for -
13.1.1 the Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Systems
Engineering; or
13.1.2 the Graduate Certificate in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering
-
or have other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are
equivalent or a satisfactory substitute.
13.2 A candidate who -
13.2.1 has not qualified for admission under paragraph 13.1.2; and
13.2.2 withdraws from candidature after satisfactorily completing the
requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Electrical and Computer
Systems Engineering -
is qualified for the award of that graduate certificate.
14. Postgraduate Diploma in Infrastructure Engineering and Management
14.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for
the Postgraduate Diploma in Infrastructure Engineering and Management
must have qualified in the university for the Graduate Certificate in
Infrastructure Engineering and Management with a minimum average grade
of 65%.
14.2 Full credit may be granted for work satisfactorily completed in
the course of study for the Graduate Certificate in Infrastructure Engineering
and Management.
15. Postgraduate Diploma in Materials Engineering
An applicant for admission to candidature for the Postgraduate Diploma
in Materials Engineering must have -
15.1.1 qualified in the university for the Bachelor of Engineering;
or
15.1.2 other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are
equivalent or a satisfactory substitute.
16. Postgraduate Diploma in Telecommunication
Engineering
16.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the Postgraduate
Diploma in Telecommunication Engineering must have qualified in the university
for -
16.1.1 the Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Systems
Engineering; or
16.1.2 the Graduate Certificate in Telecommunication Engineering -
or have other qualifications which the faculty board is satisfied are
equivalent or a satisfactory substitute.
16.2 A candidate who -
16.2.1 has not qualified for admission under paragraph 16.1.2; and
16.2.2 withdraws from candidature after satisfactorily completing the
requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Telecommunication Engineering -
is qualified for the award of that graduate certificate.
17. Postgraduate Diploma in Transport and Traffic
17.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the Postgraduate
Diploma in
Transport and Traffic must have qualified in the university for the
Graduate Certificate in Transport and Traffic with a minimum average
grade of 65%.
17.2 Full credit may be granted for work satisfactorily completed in
the course of study for the Graduate Certificate in Transport and Traffic.
