Master of Digital Communications
1. The degree
The degree of Master of Digital Communications shall be awarded in one grade
only.
2. Definitions
In these regulations unless the contrary intention appears -
'candidate' means candidate for the degree;
'course of study' means the total amount of work required to be completed to qualify
for the award of the degree;
'dean' means the dean of the faculty or the dean's nominee;
'degree' means the degree of Master of Digital Communications;
'faculty board ' means the board of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology;
'faculty information handout' means the faculty handbook or such other publication
whether in bound loose leaf or electronic form concerning the course of study
as the faculty board determines from time to time.
3. Admission to candidature
3.1 An applicant for admission to candidature must -
3.1.1 have qualified in a university in Australia for a degree or graduate
diploma in -
3.1.1.1 computing;
3.1.1.2 science with a major in computing or computer science; or
3.1.1.3 electrical or electronic engineering -
or hold an overseas qualification deemed equivalent by the faculty board; or
3.1.2 have at least four years experience in digital communications which,
in the opinion of the faculty board, constitutes a satisfactory preparation for
the course of study.
3.2 Of the applicants admitted to candidature in any one year, no more
than one-quarter may be applicants qualified for admission pursuant to paragraph
3.1.2.
3.3 An applicant who is qualified under paragraph 3.1.1 by reason of -
3.3.1 An honours degree with a grade of H11 or above; or
3.3.2 The Graduate Diploma in Digital Communications with a grade average
of C in at least 4 digital communications subjects or another qualification deemed
equivalent by the faculty board -
may be credited by the faculty board with all or any first year level subjects
in the course of study.
4. Course of study
The course of study for the degree comprises subjects and a thesis or project
as determined by the faculty board under section 5.
5.1 The faculty board may determine from time to time the subjects in
two year levels and the thesis or project comprising the course of study and
in relation to these may determine any matter including, but not limited to,
requirements concerning -
5.1.1 number, timing, duration and content;
5.1.2 subject combinations;
5.1.3 attendance at lectures, tutorial classes and seminars;
5.1.4 examination or assessment;
5.1.5 satisfactory completion; and
5.1.6 in the case of the thesis or project, publication and distribution.
5.2 The faculty board must cause to be published in the faculty information
handout all matters determined under this section.
6. Time limits
6.1 Except where the faculty board in any particular case otherwise
permits, a candidate must complete the course of study in two years of full-time
or four years of part-time candidature.
6.2 A candidate may, with the approval of the dean, change from one
type of candidature to the other, in which case the candidate shall complete
the course of study in the period determined by the dean with reference to
the periods specified in subsection 6.1.
7. Leave of absence
The dean may grant a candidate leave of absence for such periods and on such
conditions as the dean determines.
8. Completion of course of study
8.1 After considering the performance of a candidate in all work required
to be completed in the course of study, the faculty board may decide whether
-
8.1.1 the candidate has satisfied the course of study requirements;
8.1.2 the candidate has failed to satisfy the course of study requirements;
or
8.1.3 the candidate be permitted within a specified period to complete
further specified work in the course of study.
8.2 A candidate who satisfies the course of study requirements qualifies
for the award of the degree.
9. Reversion to Graduate Diploma in Digital Communications
9.1 A candidate who has satisfactorily completed all subjects in the first
year level of the course of study and who wishes to transfer to candidature
for the Graduate Diploma in Digital Communications may be granted credit for
those subjects by the faculty board towards that Graduate Diploma.
9.2 A candidate who has been granted credit under sub-section 9.1 may,
at the direction of the faculty board, be admitted with that credit to candidature
for, or be declared by the faculty board to have qualified for, the award of
the Graduate Diploma in Digital Communications.
9.3 A candidate admitted to candidature for the Graduate Diploma in Digital
Communications pursuant to subsection 9.2, must complete the course of study
for the graduate diploma within the time specified by the dean.
10. Changes in regulations and course of study requirements -
10.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations
and with the requirements concerning the course of study determined by the faculty
board under section 5 as in force or published from time to time.
10.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since being
admitted to candidature, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change
in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit
the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or course of study
requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided
the board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent
in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study.
