Graduate diplomas
Diplomas
1. There shall be graduate diplomas to be awarded in one grade only
and the title of each diploma shall be:
- Graduate Diploma in Archives and Records Management (GradDipArch&RecMgt);
- Graduate Diploma in Business Systems (GradDipBusSys);
- Graduate Diploma in Business Technology (GradDipBusTech);
- Graduate Diploma in Computer Graphics (GradDipCompGraph);
- Graduate Diploma in Computer Science (GradDipCompSc);
- Graduate Diploma in Computing (GradDipComp);
- Graduate Diploma in Decision Support Systems (GradDipDecSuppSys);
- Graduate Diploma in Digital Communications (GradDipDigComm);
- Graduate Diploma in Information Systems (GradDipInfoSys);
- Graduate Diploma in Information Technology (GradDipInfoTech);
- Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Studies (GradDipInfoSt);
- Graduate Diploma in Robotics (GradDipRob).
Definitions
2. In these regulations and in the outline of subjects, unless the contrary
intention appears, the following definitions shall apply:
'dean' means the dean of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology
or the dean's nominee;
'faculty board' means the faculty board of the Faculty of Computing and
Information Technology;
'diploma' shall mean the relevant graduate diploma;
'course' shall mean the set of subjects to be passed by a candidate to
complete the degree;
'subject' shall mean a prescribed amount of work normally extending over
not more than one academic semester, and counting as a specified number
of points towards the degree;
'prerequisite' for a given subject means a designated subject which must
be passed before a candidate can enrol in a given subject;
'corequisite' for a given subject means a designated subject which, if
not already passed, must be studied at the same time as the given subject.
The designated subject must be completed before the given subject shall
be counted towards the degree;
'discipline' shall mean a group of subjects offered within one department
of any faculty of the university.
'passed' shall mean passing a subject with a grade of P1 or higher.
Application
3. An applicant for admission to candidature for the diploma shall apply
in writing to the registrar.
Qualifications for admission to candidature
4. An applicant for admission to candidature for the diploma shall:
4.1 have qualified at this university for a degree which the faculty
board considers to be a suitable preparation for the proposed course
of study; or
4.2 have qualified at another university, or an equivalent institution,
for a degree which is acceptable to the faculty board as a suitable preparation
for the proposed course of study; or
4.3 have qualifications and experience which in the opinion of the board
are equivalent to those referred to in 4.1 or
4.4 provided that the board
is satisfied that the applicant's degree or qualifications and experience
constitute a suitable preparation for the proposed studies.
Duration of candidature
5. A candidate shall normally complete the requirements for the diploma
within the prescribed period; such period being;
5.1 in the case of a full-time candidate, one year; or
5.2 in the case of a part-time candidate, four years; or
5.3 in the case where a candidate changes from one type of candidature
to the other, a period determined by the dean or the dean's nominee proportionately
according to the periods prescribed in the foregoing subsection.
Credit for work done elsewhere
6. The dean may, on the recommendation of the head of a department in
the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, grant credit to
a candidate for work completed in this or another faculty in this or
another university or tertiary educational institution provided that:
6.1 credit for work completed more than ten years prior to admission
to candidature is at the discretion of the dean;
6.2 credit shall not normally be given for more than one half a year's
work towards the diploma.
7. Where credit is granted to a candidate pursuant to section 6, subsection
6.1 and 6.2, the dean shall specify the time within which the candidate
shall complete the diploma.
Course restrictions and requirements
8. The faculty board may prescribe in the outline of graduate studies
or details of subjects:
8.1 the prerequisites and corequisites for a subject to be taken for
the diploma;
8.2 restrictions on subject combinations which may be taken by a candidate;
8.3 the order in which subjects to be completed may be taken.
Completion of a subject
9. To complete a subject a candidate shall, to the satisfaction of the
head of the department concerned:
9.1 attend such lectures, tutorial classes and laboratory sessions and
complete such exercises, projects, and laboratory work, if any, as may
be prescribed by the department;
9.2 pass the examinations of the subject.
Approval of course
10. At the beginning of each year of study, a candidate shall obtain
approval of the dean for the selection of subjects to be taken in that
year.
11. Each candidate shall complete such courses as are prescribed by
the faculty board in the outline of graduate studies or details of subjects.
12. A candidate shall, to the satisfaction of the dean of the faculty,
attend such lectures, tutorial classes and seminars and complete such
exercises and practical work as may be prescribed by the faculty board
in the outline of courses, provided that if the faculty board considers
that the candidate has not complied with the prescribed requirements,
the candidate may be refused admission to the examinations.
The course structure
13. A candidate for the diploma shall complete the diploma in accordance
with schedule I of this regulation.
13.1 Except with the permission of the dean in circumstances which the
dean considers special, the course to be completed shall be as listed
in schedule I hereto attached.
Leave of absence
14. The dean may grant a candidate leave of absence for such a period
and on such conditions as the faculty board may determine.
Examinations
15. Examinations for the diploma shall be held in such a manner as the
faculty board may, from time to time, determine.
Grades of pass
16. Subject to section 16.1, examination results shall be awarded in
six grades in ascending order: fail (N), pass (terminating pass) (PII),
pass (P), credit (C), distinction (D), high distinction (HD). In addition,
the grade PQ may be used for a pass where there is no higher grade available
and NE (not assessed at this time) for deferred assessment.
16.1 A candidate for the purposes of qualifying for the diploma shall
not count or include more than two subjects passed at PII level.
Academic progress
17. The faculty board may review the academic progress of a candidate
and, after taking into account any recommendations from the dean of the
faculty, and offering the candidate an opportunity to be heard, may terminate
the candidature on the grounds of unsatisfactory progress.
18. Where a candidate satisfactorily completes the course of studies,
the examinations for the diploma and such practical work as may have
been prescribed, the faculty board shall recommend the award of the diploma.
19. Students who complete the Graduate Diploma in Business Systems course
at an honours IIB level or better and do not take out the graduate diploma
may proceed directly into the second year of the Master of Business Systems.
Effects of changes in regulations
20.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations
and with the requirements concerning the relevant course of study determined
by the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published
from time to time.
20.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first
enrolling for a diploma, been unreasonably adversely affected by any
change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty
board must permit the candidate to qualify for the diploma under the
regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at
some time during candidature, provided the board is satisfied that the
work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently
required to complete the course of study.
Schedule I
To qualify for the award of the diploma a candidate shall be required
to complete the prescribed subjects as set out in the outline of graduate
studies or the details of subjects.
