Diploma in Computing


1. The diploma

The Diploma in Computing (DipComp) may be awarded in one grade only.


2. Interpretation

2.1 In these regulations unless the contrary intention appears -

'candidate' means a candidate for the diploma;

'course of study' means the subjects to be completed by a candidate to qualify for the diploma;

'credit points' means the numeric value of a subject as determined from time to time by the faculty board;

'dean' means the dean of the faculty or the dean's nominee;

'diploma' means the Diploma in Computing;

'faculty' means the Faculty of Information Technology;

'faculty board' means the faculty board of the faculty;

'faculty information handout' means the faculty handbook or such other publication in bound, loose leaf or electronic form concerning the course of study as the faculty board determines from time to time;

'school' means a school of the faculty;

'subject' means a subject in the course of study.


3. Credit points

3.1 A candidate shall, in accordance with these regulations, complete subjects totalling in value at least 96 credit points.

3.2 A normal year's work for a full time student for the diploma is valued at 48 credit points.


4. Approval of subjects

Before enrolling in any year, a candidate must obtain the approval of the dean for selection of subjects to be taken in the year.


5. Course of study requirements

5.1 The faculty board may determine the requirements for the course of study including, but not limited to -

5.1.1
compulsory and elective subjects;

5.1.2
prerequisite and corequisite requirements for any subject;

5.1.3
subject combinations;

5.1.4
combined courses;

5.1.5
part-time courses; and

5.1.6
examination or assessment.

5.2
The faculty board must cause to be published in a faculty information handout all matters determined under this section.

5.3 In this section -

5.3.1
'corequisite' in relation to a given subject is a designated subject which is studied before or at the same time as the given subject and must be passed before the given subject can be counted towards the diploma;

5.3.2
'prerequisite' in relation to a given subject is a designated subject that must be passed before a candidate can enrol for the given subject; and

5.3.3
'elective subject' is a subject taught in any faculty of the university and approved by the dean as appropriate to the particular year level in the course of study.


6. Completion of a subject

To complete a subject a candidate must, to the satisfaction of the relevant head of school -

6.1
attend such lectures, tutorial classes and laboratory sessions and complete such exercises, projects and practical and laboratory work as may be determined by the school; and

6.2
satisfy any requirements for the subject determined by the faculty board under section 5.


7. Time limits

7.1 Unless otherwise authorised by the dean in any particular case, or otherwise provided in these regulations, a candidate for the diploma must complete the course of study within a period of -

7.1.1
three years of full-time candidature; or

7.1.2
seven years of part-time candidature.

7.2
Where a candidate changes from one type of candidature to another the candidate must complete the course of study within a period determined by the dean proportionately to the periods specified in subsection 7.1


8. Credit for work done elsewhere

8.1 Where the dean, on the recommendation of a head of school, is satisfied that a candidate has completed study or experience equivalent to particular requirements for the diploma, the candidate shall be deemed to have completed those requirements and shall be awarded the credit points appropriate thereto.

8.2
Credit under subsection 8.1 shall not be granted for -

8.2.1
work completed more than ten years prior to candidature; or

8.2.2
more than one year's work towards the diploma.

8.3
Where credit is granted to a candidate pursuant to this section, the candidate must complete the course of study within a period determined by the dean.


9. Leave of absence

The dean may, subject to any conditions specified, grant to any candidate leave of absence for an accumulated period of not more than two years.

10. Grades of pass

10.1 Subject to this section, an examination result must be awarded in one of the following grades -
  • Fail (N);

  • Near Pass (NP);

  • Pass (P);

  • Credit (C);

  • Distinction (D); or

  • High Distinction (HD)
10.2 In addition to the grades specified in sub-section 10.1 the grade PGO may be used for a pass (P) where there is no higher grade available and the grade NE (not assessed at this time) may be used for deferred assessment.

10.3
A candidate who does not achieve at least a pass (P) in a first semester subject which forms part of a pair of sequential subjects may be awarded a provisional pass (PR) and may be permitted to proceed to a second semester subject which forms the other part of the pair and on completion of the second part of the pair, the provisional pass (PR) must be amended to pass (P) or fail (N).

10.4
In the count of credit points for a diploma -

10.4.1
in any year, no more than 12 credit points of NP grades shall be included; and

10.4.2
in total, no more than 16 credit points of NP grades shall be included.

10.5
Where a candidate obtains a NP grade for a subject and subsequently obtains a higher grade for that subject, the NP grade shall not be included in the count of credit points for the diploma.


11. Qualification

A candidate who completes the course of study in accordance with these regulations qualifies for the diploma.


12. Changes in regulations

12.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the course of study determined by the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published from time to time.

12.2
Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for the diploma, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board shall permit the candidate to qualify for the diploma under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study.
