Graduate Certificate in Computing


1. There shall be a Graduate Certificate in Computing (GradCertComp) to be awarded in one grade only.


Definitions

2. In these regulations and in the outline of subjects, unless the contrary intention appears, the following definitions shall apply:

'dean' means the dean of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology or the dean's nominee;

'faculty board' means the faculty board of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology;

'faculty information handout' means a faculty handbook or such other publication whether bound, loose leaf or electronic form concerning courses of study in the faculty as the faculty board determines from time to time;

'certificate' shall mean the Graduate Certificate in Computing;

'course' shall mean the set of subjects to be passed by a candidate towards the certificate;

'subject' shall mean a prescribed amount of work normally extending over not more than one academic semester.

'prerequisite' for a given subject means a designated subject which must be passed before a candidate can enrol in a given subject;

'corequisite' for a given subject means a designated subject that, if not already passed, must be studied at the same time as the given subject. The designated subject must be completed before the given subject shall be counted towards the certificate;

'discipline' shall mean a group of subjects offered within one department of any faculty of the university.

'passed' shall mean passing a subject with a grade of P1 or higher.


Application

3. An applicant for admission to candidature for the certificate shall apply in writing to the registrar.


Qualifications for admission to candidature

4. An applicant for admission to candidature for the certificate shall:

4.1
have qualified at this university for a degree which the faculty board considers to be a suitable preparation for the proposed course of study; or

4.2
have qualified at another university, or an equivalent institution, for a degree which is acceptable to the faculty board as a suitable preparation for the proposed course of study; or

4.3
have qualifications and experience which in the opinion of the faculty board constitute a suitable preparation for the proposed studies. A maximum of 25 per cent of candidates may be selected from this category.


Duration of candidature

5. A candidate shall complete the requirements for the certificate within the prescribed period; such period being -

in the case of a full-time candidate, one half year; or

5.2
in the case of a part-time candidate, one year; or

5.3
in the case where a candidate changes from one type of candidature to the other, a period determined by the dean proportionately according to the periods prescribed in the foregoing subsection.


Credit for work done elsewhere

6. The dean may, on the recommendation of the head of a department in the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, grant credit to a candidate for work completed in this or another faculty in this or another university or tertiary educational institution provided that:

6.1
credit for work completed more than ten years prior to admission to candidature is at the discretion of the dean;

6.2
credit shall not normally be given for more than two subjects towards the certificate;

7. Where credit is granted to a candidate pursuant to section 6 subsection 6.1 and 6.2, the dean shall specify the time within which the candidate shall complete the certificate.


Course restrictions and requirements

8. The faculty board may prescribe in the outline of graduate studies or details of subjects:

8.1
the prerequisites and corequisites for a subject to be taken for the certificate;

8.2
restrictions on subject combinations which may be taken by a candidate;

8.3
the order in which subjects to be completed may be taken.


Completion of a subject

9. To complete a subject a candidate shall, to the satisfaction of the head of the department concerned:

9.1
attend such lectures, tutorial classes and laboratory sessions and complete such exercises, projects, and laboratory work, if any, as may be prescribed by the department;

9.2
pass the examinations of the subject.


Approval of course

10. At the beginning of each year of study, a candidate shall obtain approval of the dean for the selection of subjects to be taken in that year.

11. Each candidate shall complete such courses as are prescribed by the faculty board in the outline of graduate studies or details of subjects.

12. A candidate shall, to the satisfaction of the dean of the faculty, attend such lectures, tutorial classes and seminars and complete such exercises and practical work as may be prescribed by the faculty board in the outline of courses, provided that if the faculty board considers that the candidate has not complied with the prescribed requirements, the candidate may be refused admission to the examinations.


The course structure

13. A candidate for the certificate shall complete the certificate in accord with the requirements of the schedule.

13.1
Except with the permission of the dean in circumstances the dean considers special, the course to be completed shall be as stated in the schedule.


Leave of absence

14. The dean may grant a candidate leave of absence for such a period and on such conditions as the faculty board may determine.


Examinations

15. Examinations for the certificate shall be held in such a manner as the faculty board may, from time to time, determine.


Grades of pass

16. Subject to section 16.1, examination results shall be awarded in six grades in ascending order: fail(N), pass (terminating pass) (PII), pass(P), credit(C), distinction(D), high distinction(HD). In addition the grade PQ may be used for a pass where there is no higher grade available and NE (not assessed at this time) for deferred assessment.

A candidate for the purposes of qualifying for the certificate shall not count or include more than one subject passed at PII level.


Academic progress

17. The faculty board may review the academic progress of a candidate and, after taking into account any recommendations from the dean of the faculty, and offering the candidate an opportunity to be heard, may terminate the candidature on the grounds of unsatisfactory progress.

18. Where a candidate satisfactorily completes the course of studies, the examinations for the certificate and such practical work as may have been prescribed, the faculty board shall recommend the award of the certificate.


Effects of changes in regulations

19. A candidate shall comply with these regulations as from time to time amended or remade. However, if the faculty board is of the opinion that the candidate has been adversely affected by a change in the regulations since first enrolled as a candidate, the faculty board may allow the candidate to qualify for the certificate under the regulations previously in force during the period of candidature.


Schedule

To qualify for the award of the certificate a candidate shall complete four subjects as set out in a faculty information handout.
