Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences regulations
Undergraduate Degrees
1. Degrees
The degrees listed in Schedules I and II may be undertaken pursuant to these regulations
2. Interpretations
In these regulations, unless the contrary intention appears -
"candidate" means a candidate for a degree;
"course of study" means the course of study for a degree determined by or under these regulations;
“credit points” means the measurement used to express the weight of a unit or other work requirement for a degree;
"dean" means the dean of the faculty;
"degree" means a degree listed in Schedule I or Schedule II and -
- ‘pass degree’ means a degree listed in Schedule I; and
- ‘honours degree’ means a degree listed in Schedule II;
"faculty" means the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences;
"faculty board" means the faculty board of the faculty;
"faculty information handout" means the faculty section of the undergraduate handbook of the university or such other publication concerning
a course of study, whether bound, loose leaf or in electronic form, as the faculty board determines from time to time.
3. Course of study
3.1 The course of study for -
3.1.1 a pass degree consists of units; and
3.1.2 an honours degree consists of units, a thesis or project,
and practical work.
3.2 The faculty board may from time to time determine
the particulars of a course of study and in relation to the particulars
may determine any matter including but not limited to requirements concerning
-
3.2.1 number, timing, content and duration;
3.2.2 clinical placements and other practical work;
3.2.3 in relation to a thesis or project, supervision and distribution;
3.2.4 attendance and participation;
3.2.5 credit points;
3.2.6 assessment; and
3.2.7 satisfactory completion.
3.3 The faculty board may determine special requirements
in relation to a course of study undertaken -
3.3.1 through off campus learning; or
3.3.2 as part of a double degree pursuant to these regulations.
3.4 The faculty board must cause each determination
under this section to be published in a faculty information handout.
3.5 Except where the dean in any particular case otherwise
determines, a candidate in any year of a course of study may only undertake
the units and other work determined by the faculty board for that particular
year.
4. Candidature
4.1 Candidature -
4.1.1 may be full-time or, with the approval of the dean, part-time;
4.1.2 where the faculty board so determines, may be undertaken through off- campus learning; and
4.1.3 subject to the regulations, must be continuous.
4.2 A candidate may, with the consent of the dean, transfer from full-time to part-time candidature or vice versa and,
in this event, must complete the course of study in the time specified by the dean.
5. Credit
5.1 Where the faculty board, on the recommendation of the dean, is satisfied that a candidate has completed work
equivalent to particular requirements of the course of study for a degree, the faculty board may grant the candidate credit towards the degree
in respect of that work, provided that the candidate must complete a minimum of -
5.1.1 48 credit points in the course of study; or
5.1.2 50% of the work in the course of study -
whichever is the lesser.
5.2 Except where the faculty board in circumstances it deems exceptional otherwise determines, credit under this
section must not be granted in respect of work completed more than 10 years before admission to candidature.
5.3 A candidate granted credit under this section must
complete the course of study in the time specified by the faculty board.
6. Work in another educational institution
The dean -
6.1.1 may authorise a candidate for a degree to undertake, in another educational institution, specified work towards the
degree; and
6.1.2 in this event, must specify the credit that will be granted towards the degree in respect of any such work
satisfactorily completed.
7. Honours grades An honours degree or a pass degree with honours may, at the discretion of the faculty board, be awarded in one of the following grades:
- Honours 1 (H1)
- Honours 2, Division A (H2A) or Division B (H2B)
- Honours 3 (H3)
8. Compliance
8.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the
relevant course of study determined by the faculty board under these regulations, as in force or published from time to time.
8.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for a degree, been unreasonably adversely
affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit the candidate to qualify for the
degree under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at sometime during candidature, provided that the faculty
board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of
study.

Part II - Pass degrees
9. Interpretation
In this part -
'candidate' means a candidate for a degree;
'degree' means a pass degree listed in Schedule I.
10. Time limits
Except as otherwise provided in the regulations or as otherwise determined by the faculty board in any particular case, the maximum
period of candidature for a degree, including any period of intermission, is the period prescribed by the faculty board and published in a
faculty information handout.
11. Intermission
The dean may, subject to any conditions specified, grant a candidate intermission for -
11.1.1 a continuous period of up to 12 months; and
11.1.2 for a maximum of three years in total.
12. Single units
12.1 The faculty board, on the recommendation of the dean, may permit a person who is not a candidate to enrol for one or
more units in a course of study.
12.2 A person who satisfactorily completes a unit pursuant to subsection 12.1 and is subsequently admitted to
candidature for the relevant degree must be given credit for that unit.
13. Double degrees
13.1 A candidate may -
13.1.1 with the consent of the faculty board, undertake two degrees of the faculty concurrently ; or
13.1.2 with the consent of both faculty boards, undertake a degree under these regulations concurrently with a degree of
another faculty.
13.2 A candidate for a double degree is not eligible for an award under these regulations until both degrees have been
satisfactorily completed.
13.3 A candidate undertaking a double degree may, with the consent of the faculty board, transfer to candidature for one
degree or the degree of this faculty only.
13.4 Where a candidate transfers to candidature for one degree or the degree of this faculty only, the faculty board must
specify -
13.4.1 the work required to be completed by the candidate to qualify for the award of the degree; and
13.4.2 the time within which the work must be completed.
14. Qualification
A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for a degree qualifies for the award of the degree and, in the case of a
degree listed in Part B of Schedule 1 may, at the discretion of the faculty board, be awarded the degree in one of the honours grades listed in
section 7.

Part III - Honours degrees
15. Interpretation
In this part -
15.1.1 'candidate' means a candidate for an honours degree; and
15.1.2 'honours degree' means a degree listed in Schedule II.
16. Admission to candidature
16.1 An applicant for admission to candidature must have -
16.1.1 qualified for the award of a pass degree deemed appropriate
by the faculty board and specified in a faculty information handout; or
16.1.2 other qualifications and experience deemed equivalent
or a satisfactory alternative by the faculty board.
17. Time limits
17.1 Except as otherwise provided in the regulations or as otherwise determined by the faculty board in any particular case,
the course of study for an honours degree must be completed,
including any period of intermission, in -
17.1.1 a minimum of one and a maximum of two years of full-time candidature or;
171.2 in the case of part-time candidature, a minimum of two and a maximum of four years.
18. Intermission
The dean may, subject to any conditions specified, grant a candidate intermission
for a maximum period of one year.
19. Qualification
A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for an honours degree is qualified for the award of the degree in the
appropriate grade listed in section 7, as determined by the faculty board.
