Master of Psychoanalytic Studies


1. The degree

The degree of Master of Psychoanalytic Studies (MPS) shall be awarded in one grade only.


2. Interpretation

In these regulations, unless the contrary intention appears -

'advisory committee' means the Master of Psychoanalytic Studies advisory committee;

'candidate' means a candidate for the degree;

'course coordinator' means the person appointed to that position by the faculty board;

'course of study' means the total amount of academic and practical work required to be completed by a candidate to qualify for the degree;

'degree' means the degree of Master of Psychoanalytic Studies;

'faculty board' means the faculty board of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences;

'faculty information handout' means a faculty handbook or such other publication, whether in bound, loose leaf or electronic form, concerning the course of study as the faculty board determines from time to time;

'head' means the head of the Department of Psychological Medicine;

'thesis' means the minor thesis in the course of study.


3. Advisory Committee

3.1 The faculty board may appoint a Master of Psychoanalytic Studies advisory committee to assist the board in the administration of the degree.

3.2
An advisory committee appointed under subsection 3.1 shall consist of -

3.2.1
the head of the Department of Psychological Medicine who shall chair the committee;

3.2.2
the course coordinator;

3.2.3
two members appointed by the Department of Psychological Medicine; and

3.2.4
one member appointed by the Victorian Department of Health and Community Services (Psychiatric Services Branch).


4. Admission to Candidature

4.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree must -

4.1.1
have qualified for a degree in this university or in another tertiary institution and have had a minimum of two years professional experience which together, in the opinion of the faculty board, constitute a suitable preparation for the candidate's proposed course of study; or

4.1.2
have qualifications and professional experience which, after consultation with the advisory committee, the faculty board considers equivalent to or a satisfactory substitute for the qualifications and experience specified in paragraph 4.1.1.

4.2
The faculty board shall not admit a person to candidature unless the board is satisfied, after consultation with the head and the advisory committee, that adequate facilities and supervision are available.


5. Supervision

5.1 The faculty board shall, after consultation with the advisory committee, appoint a supervisor for each candidate.

5.2
A supervisor appointed under subsection 5.1 shall be a member of the teaching staff and shall be responsible to the faculty board for the candidate's thesis.


Course of Study

6. The course of study -

6.1.1
comprises compulsory and elective subjects and a minor thesis, as determined by the faculty board; and

6.1.2
shall be completed in not more than five years of part-time candidature, except where the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines.

7.1 The faculty board on the recommendation of the head may determine from time to time the subjects, compulsory and elective, and the minor thesis constituting the course of study and in relation to those subjects and thesis may determine any matter including but not limited to requirements concerning -

7.1.1
number, timing, duration and content;

7.1.2
attendance and participation;

7.1.3
examination and assessment;

7.1.4
satisfactory completion; and

7.1.5
in the case of the thesis, publication.

7.2
The faculty board must cause determinations under this section to be published in a faculty information handout.


8. Thesis

The thesis must be carried out by a candidate under supervision and must demonstrate independence of thought and an ability to carry out research in the field concerned.


9. Credit for previous work

9.1 A candidate, who, prior to candidature, completed work which the faculty board, after consultation with the advisory committee, considers equivalent to completing particular work in the course of study, shall be deemed to have completed that particular work and shall be granted credit in respect it.

9.2
Credit under this section must not be granted in respect of -

9.2.1
work completed more than ten years before admission to candidature, unless the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines; or

9.2.2
the thesis.


10. Satisfactory completion

A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study qualifies for the award of the degree.


11. Regulations and course requirements

11.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the course of study determined by the faculty board, as in force or published from time to time.

11.2
Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for the degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements the faculty board may permit the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent to that currently required to complete the course of study.
