Master of Public Health



1. The degree

The degree of Master of Public Health (MPH) shall be awarded in one grade only.


2. Interpretation

In these regulations, unless the contrary intention appears -

'candidate' means a candidate for the degree;

'chairperson' means the chairperson of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine;

'course of study' means the total amount of academic and practical work required to be completed by a candidate to qualify for the degree;

'degree' means the degree of Master of Public Health;

'faculty board' means the faculty board of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences;

'faculty information handout' means a faculty handbook or such other publication, whether in bound, loose leaf or electronic form, concerning the course of study as the faculty board determines from time to time;

'thesis' means the minor thesis in the course of study, as determined by the faculty board.


3. Admission to candidature

3.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree shall -

3.1.1 not less than two years previously, have qualified for the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery; or

3.1.2 hold qualifications which, in the opinion of the faculty board are equivalent to or a satisfactory substitute for the qualifications specified in paragraph 3.1.1.

3.2 The faculty board shall not admit a person to candidature for the degree unless the board is satisfied, on the advice of the chairperson, that adequate facilities and supervision are available.


4. The course of study -

4.1.1 comprises the subjects or the subjects and minor thesis determined by the faculty board under section 5; and

4.1.2 shall be completed in a maximum of five years, unless the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines.

5.1 The faculty board may determine from time to time the subjects, and the subjects and minor thesis, constituting the course of study and in relation to those subjects and thesis may determine any matter including, but not limited to, requirements concerning -

5.1.1 number, timing, duration and content;

5.1.2 attendance and participation;

5.1.3 examination and assessment;

5.1.4 satisfactory completion; and

5.1.5 in the case of the thesis, supervision and publication.

5.2 Determinations of the faculty board under this section must be published in a faculty information handout.

6. The thesis must be carried out by a candidate under supervision and must demonstrate independence of thought and an ability to carry out research in the field concerned.

7.1 The faculty board must, after consultation with the chairperson, appoint a supervisor for each candidate undertaking the thesis.

7.2 A supervisor appointed under subsection 7.1 must be a member of the teaching staff and shall be responsible to the faculty board.


8. Satisfactory completion

A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study qualifies for the award of the degree.


9. Course regulations and requirements

9.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the course of study determined by the faculty board as in force or published from time to time.

9.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for the degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board may permit the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent to that currently required to complete the course of study.
