Master of Reproductive Sciences


1. The degree

There shall be a degree of Master of Reproductive Sciences (MRepSc) awarded in one grade only.


2. Definitions

In these regulations, unless the contrary intention appears:

'faculty board' means the faculty board of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences;

'faculty information handout' means a faculty handbook or such other publication whether in bound, loose leaf or electronic form concerning the course of study as the faculty board determines from time to time;

'director' means the director of the Institute of Reproduction and Development;

'degree' means the degree of Master of Reproductive Sciences;

'Institute' means the Institute of Reproduction and Development.


3. Admission to candidature

3.1 The faculty board on the recommendation of the director may admit to candidature for the degree of Master of Reproductive Sciences, either as a full-time or part-time candidate, an applicant who has:

3.1.1
qualified with honours for Bachelor Degrees in either science, medicine, paramedical, agricultural or veterinary science in this university or in another university or institution of higher learning;

3.1.2
qualified with a pass degree in the above mentioned disciplines with at least two years relevant experience;

3.1.3
qualified for the Graduate Diploma in Reproductive Sciences with at least a credit in each component of the course; or

3.1.4
obtained qualifications and experience which in the opinion of the faculty board on the advice of the director are a suitable preparation for the candidate's proposed field of study.

3.2
An applicant shall not be admitted to candidature unless the faculty board is satisfied on the advice of the director that adequate facilities and supervision are available.


4. Conditions of candidature

4.1 When an applicant has been admitted to candidature the faculty board on the advice of the director:

4.1.1
shall appoint a member of the staff of the university as supervisor, who shall be responsible to the faculty board;

4.1.2
may also appoint, where appropriate, an associate supervisor, who need not be a member of the university but shall be of recognised standing in the relevant field.

5. Subject to Statute 6.2 - Exclusion for unsatisfactory progress, the faculty board may review the academic progress of a candidate and, after taking into account any recommendations of the director and supervisors, and after giving the candidate an opportunity to be heard, may terminate the candidature on the grounds of unsatisfactory performance.


6. Courses of study

6.1 A candidate for the degree must satisfactorily complete the course of study, including a thesis on an aspect of the reproductive sciences, as determined by the faculty board under subsection 6.2.

6.2
The faculty board may from time to time determine the subjects and thesis comprising the course of study and in relation to these may determine any matter or thing including but not limited to requirements concerning -

6.2.1
number, timing, duration and content;

6.2.2
attendance and participation;

6.2.3
in relation to the thesis -

6.2.3.1
research and supervision; and

6.2.3.2
publication and confidentiality;

6.2.4
assessment; and

6.2.5
satisfactory completion.

6.3
The faculty board must cause each determination under this section to be published in a faculty information handout.

6.4
Notwithstanding the foregoing provisions of this section, the faculty board may, in special circumstances, grant to a candidate, who prior to or after admission to candidature has completed similar work in other universities or institutions of higher learning recognised for this purpose by the faculty board credit for such courses up to a maximum of 25 percent of the total requirement for the degree.


7. Duration of candidature

7.1 The course of study must be completed -

7.1.1
in the case of a candidate who has qualified for the Graduate Diploma in Reproductive Sciences -

7.1.1.1
in not less than 18 or more than 36 months of full-time candidature; or

7.1.1.2
in not less than 36 or more than 72 months of part-time candidature; and

7.1.2
in all other cases -

7.1.2.1 in not less than 24 or more than 48 months of full-time candidature; or

7.1.2.2
in not less than 48 or more than 72 months of part-time candidature.

7.2
Where the institute grants an application by a candidate for candidature to be changed from full-time to part-time or from part-time to full-time, the faculty board shall determine the minimum and maximum periods of candidature within the limits prescribed in subsection 7.1.


8. Minor thesis

8.1 The work for the thesis shall be carried out by the candidate, under supervision, in an area of the subject approved by the director and shall embody the results of an investigation carried out by the candidate demonstrating an ability to carry out independent research.

8.2
The candidate shall state in the thesis, generally in a preface and specifically in notes, the sources from which the candidate's information was derived, the extent the candidate has used the work of others, and the portion of the thesis which the candidate claims as original. If some or all of the work submitted for the degree has been carried out in collaboration with another person, the thesis shall be accompanied by a statement signed by the supervisor and collaborator, indicating the relative contribution made by the collaborator. The candidate shall also state on the title page of the thesis the proportion of the total requirement for the degree, as prescribed by the faculty concerned, which the thesis represents.

8.3
A candidate shall not submit for the degree any work previously accepted for a degree nor shall the candidate, without the consent of the faculty board, submit any work which the candidate has previously submitted for a degree.


9. Submission of thesis

9.1 Four copies of the thesis which shall include a summary and supporting papers, if any, shall be lodged with the registrar together with four separate copies of the summary.

9.2
Unless previously published, the thesis shall be:

9.2.1
typewritten or printed on paper of size and quality approved by the faculty board; and

9.2.2
bound in a form approved by the faculty board.


10. Certificate of supervisor

10.1 When a candidate has submitted a thesis, the supervisor shall submit a statement certifying:

10.1.1
to the best of the supervisor's knowledge, the extent to which the work was carried out by the candidate;

10.1.2
whether, in the supervisor's opinion, the thesis is properly presented and is prima facie worthy of examination.

10.2
Where the supervisor does not certify that, in the supervisor's opinion, the thesis is properly presented and is prima facie worthy of examination, the faculty board, after taking into consideration the views of the director, shall determine whether or not the thesis is to be examined.


11. Examination

11.1 On receipt of the thesis, the faculty board shall, on the recommendation of the director, appoint at least two examiners, neither of whom shall be the candidate's supervisor and, unless the faculty board otherwise agrees, at least one of the examiners shall be external.


12. Examiners report

12.1 Each examiner shall evaluate the thesis and report to the faculty board as to its acceptability in partial satisfaction of the degree requirements.

12.2
It shall then be determined by the faculty board whether:

12.2.1
the candidate has satisfied the requirements for the degree; or

12.2.2
the candidate has failed to satisfy the requirements for the degree; or

12.2.3
the candidate be given leave to submit an amended thesis or to present for further examination or to complete further course work, in any combination as the case may require, within such further period and on such conditions as it may prescribe.


13. Publication of thesis

13.1 After the faculty board has decided that the candidate has satisfied the requirements for the degree, it shall require the candidate to have bound in book form two copies of the thesis, accepted for the purpose of the degree, of which:

13.1.1
one copy shall be lodged by the registrar in the library of the university where it may be made available by the librarian to any person for consultation and photocopying provided that for a period of three years after the thesis is lodged it shall not be available as aforesaid without the consent in writing of the author,

13.1.2
the other copy shall be transmitted to the director.

13.2
Of the other copies:

13.2.1
one shall be held by the supervisor, and

13.2.2
one shall be returned to the candidate.

13.3
One copy of any thesis not accepted for the degree shall be lodged with the registrar.


14. Effect of changes in regulations

14.1 A candidate shall comply with these regulations as from time to time amended or remade provided that where the faculty board is of the opinion that any candidate for the degree has been adversely affected by a change in these regulations since the candidate first enrolled as a candidate for the degree, the faculty board may act to remove the adverse effects on the candidate by permitting him or her to qualify for the degree under these regulations as if they were in force without the particular change or changes which adversely affected the candidate.
