Undergraduate degrees


Part I - General


1. The degrees

The degrees of -

1.1.1
Bachelor of Pharmacy;

1.1.2
Bachelor of Formulation Science; and

1.1.3
Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science (Honours)
may be undertaken in the faculty


2. Interpretation

In these regulations unless the contrary intention appears -

'candidate' means a candidate for a degree;

'faculty' means the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences;

'course of study' means the total amount of academic, practical and research work required to be completed by a candidate to qualify for a degree;

'dean' means the dean of the faculty;

'degree' means a degree specified in section 1;

'information handout' means a faculty handbook or such other publication whether in bound, loose leaf or electronic form concerning courses of study in the faculty, as the faculty board determines from time to time.


3. Approval of subjects

Before enrolling in any year a candidate must obtain the dean's approval of the subjects and any other work proposed to be undertaken by the candidate in that year.


4. Regulations and course of study requirements

4.1 Subject to this section a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the requirements concerning the course of study determined by the faculty board as in force or published from time to time.

4.2
Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for a degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the board may permit the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study.

Part II - Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Formulation Science

5. 1 In this part 'degree' means the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy or Bachelor of Formulation Science (as the case requires).

5.2
The degree of -

5.2.1
Bachelor of Pharmacy may be awarded as a pass degree or a degree with honours; and

5.2.2
Bachelor of Formulation Science may be awarded as a pass degree only.


6. Course of study

6.1 The course of study for a degree comprises the subjects and practical experience programs determined by the faculty board under this section.

6.2
The faculty board may from time to time determine the subjects and practical experience programs constituting a course of study and in relation to these may determine any matter or thing including but not limited to -

6.2.1
number, timing, duration and content;

6.2.2
attendance and participation;

6.2.3
examination and assessment; and

6.2.4
satisfactory completion.

6.3
Determinations of the faculty board under this section must be published in an information handout.


7. Time limits

7.1 Except where the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines, the course of study for the degree of -

7.1.1
Bachelor of Pharmacy must be completed in not less than four or more than six years of full-time candidature; and

7.1.2
Bachelor of Formulation Science must be completed in not less than three or more than five of full-time candidature.


8. Credit for previous work

8.1 A candidate who has completed work which in the opinion of the faculty board is equivalent to or a satisfactory substitute for particular subjects in a course of study, may be granted credit by the board in respect of those particular subjects.

8.2
Credit under subsection 8.1 must not be granted in respect of -

8.2.1
more than half the work in a course of study, except where the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines; or
8.2.2 work completed more than ten years prior to admission to candidature.


9. Leave of absence

A dean may grant a candidate leave of absence, subject to any conditions specified, for a maximum period of one year or for any longer period authorised by the faculty board in any particular case.


10. Grades of pass

10.1 An examination result must be awarded in one of the following grades -
  • Fail (N)

  • Pass (P)

  • Credit (C)

  • Distinction (D)

  • High Distinction (HD)
10.2 A candidate must achieve at least a pass grade in all subjects in a year level of the course of study before proceeding to the next year level.

10.3
Despite subsection 10.2, the faculty board may in any particular case where a candidate has failed in one subject of the course of study at a particular year level -

10.3.1
permit the candidate to proceed to the next year level of the course of study; or

10.3.2
in the case of a final year candidate, deem the candidate to have satisfactorily completed the course of study.


11. Qualifications

11.1 A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study for a degree qualifies for the degree and, in the case of the Bachelor of Pharmacy, for the pass degree or the degree with honours as determined by the faculty board.

11.2
The degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy with honours may award in one of the following grades as determined by the faculty board in each particular case -

  • HI

  • HII Division A or Division B

  • HIII


11A. Double degrees

11A.1 With the approval of the faculty board and of the faculty board of the other faculty concerned, a person may be enrolled as a candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy and another degree of the university approved by the faculty board for the purposes of this section and published in an information handout.

11A.2
A person undertaking a double degree under subsection 11A.1 must qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy before commencing the course of study for the other degree.

Part III - Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science (Honours)

12. In this part 'degree' means the degree of Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science (Honours)


13. Admission to candidature

Except where in any particular case the faculty board otherwise determines, an applicant for admission to candidature must have -

13.1.1
qualified in the faculty for the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy with at least a credit grade in the subject area of the candidate's proposed field of study; or

13.1.2
qualified in the university or in another educational institution for a degree which in the opinion of the faculty board is a suitable preparation for the candidate's proposed field of study; or

13.1.3
qualifications and experience which in the opinion of the faculty board are a suitable preparation for the candidate's proposed field of study.


14. Course of study

14.1 The course of study for the degree comprises subjects, compulsory and elective, and a research project as determined by the faculty board under this section.

14.2
The faculty board may from time to time determine the compulsory subjects, the elective subjects and the research project comprising the course of study and in relation to those subjects and research project may determine any matter of thing including but not limited to -

14.2.1
number, timing, duration and content;

14.2.2
attendance and participation;

14.2.5
in relation to the research project supervision, publication and confidentiality;

14.2.3
examination and assessment; and

14.2.4
satisfactory completion.

14.3
Determinations of the faculty board under this section must be published in an information handout.


15. Time limits

Except where the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines, the course of study must be completed in one year of full-time or two years of part-time candidature.


16. Grades of honours

A degree must be awarded in one of the following grades -
  • HI

  • HIIA

  • HIIB

  • HIII


17. Satisfactory completion

The candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study qualifies for the degree of the grade specified by the faculty board.
