Master of Pharmaceutical Science


1. The degree

The degree of Master of Pharmaceutical Science may be undertaken in the faculty and may be awarded in one grade only.


2. Interpretations

In these regulations unless the contrary intention appears -

'associate dean' means the associate dean of graduate studies;

'candidate' means a candidate for the degree;

'faculty' means the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences;

'faculty board' means the board of the faculty;

'course of study' means the total amount of academic and research work required to be completed by a candidate to qualify for the degree;

'degree' means the degree of Master of Pharmaceutical Science;

'information handout' means a handbook or such other publication whether in bound, loose leaf or electronic form concerning courses of study in the faculty as the faculty board determines from time to time;


3. Admission to candidature

Except where the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines, an applicant for candidature must -

3.1.1
have qualified for the degree of Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science (Honours) or Bachelor of Pharmacy with honours;

3.1.2
have qualified in the university or in another educational institution for any other degree which in the opinion of the faculty board is a suitable preparation for the candidate's proposed field of study; or

3.1.3
have qualifications and experience which in the opinion of the faculty board are a suitable preparation for the candidate's proposed field of study;


4 Course of study

4.1 The course of study comprises subjects, a research project and a thesis, as determined by the faculty board under this section.

4.2
The faculty board may from time to time determine the subjects, research projects and thesis constituting the course of study and in relation to the subjects, research projects and thesis may determine any matter or thing including but not limited to requirements concerning -

4.2.1
number, timing, duration and content;

4.2.2
attendance and participation;

4.2.3
research and supervision;

4.2.4
examination and assessment;

4.2.5
satisfactory completion; and

4.2.6
in relation to the thesis, publication and confidentiality.

4.3
Determinations of the faculty board under this section must be published in an information handout.


5. Place of work

Work for the degree must be carried out within the university unless otherwise authorised by the faculty board.


6. Time limits

Except where the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines, the course of study must be completed in -

6.1.1
in not less than 12 months of candidature; and

6.1.2
not more than three years of full-time or five years of part-time candidature.


7. Satisfactory completion

A candidate who satisfactorily completes the course of study qualifies for the degree.


8. Preliminary candidature

8.1 The faculty board may admit to preliminary candidature for the degree an applicant who has qualified for the pass degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy or has other qualifications, or qualifications and experience, which the faculty board is satisfied are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute.

8.2
A preliminary candidate must satisfactorily complete subjects and a research project as determined by the faculty board and published in a faculty information handout.

8.3
The requirements of preliminary candidature must be completed in twelve months of full-time candidature.

8.4
A candidate who satisfies the requirements of preliminary candidature -

8.4.1
may be admitted to full candidature for the degree; or.

8.4.2
may elect not to continue with full candidature for the degree; and in this event is qualified for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science (Honours).


9. Regulations and course of study requirements

9.1 Subject to this section a candidate must comply with these regulations and with the relevant course of study requirements determined by the faculty board, as in force or published from time to time.

9.2
Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first enrolling for the degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in the regulations or course of study requirements, the board may permit the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or course of study requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent in standard to that currently required to complete the course of study.
