Faculty of Science regulations
Master of Science
1. Degree
The degree of Master of Science may be undertaken in the faculty pursuant to these
regulations.
2. Interpretations
In these regulations unless the contrary intention appears -
"candidate" means a candidate for the degree;
"course of study" means a course of study for the degree determined
by the faculty board under these regulations;
"degree" means the degree of Master of Science;
"faculty" means the Faculty of Science;
"faculty board" means the faculty board of the faculty;
"faculty information handout" means the faculty handbook or such other
publication, whether in bound, loose leaf or electronic form, concerning a course
of study in the faculty, as the faculty board determines from time to time;
"preliminary candidature" means preliminary candidature for the degree by major thesis.
3. Course of study
3.1 A course of study for the degree comprises either -
3.1.1 a major thesis; or
3.1.2 a minor thesis and units.
3.2 The faculty board may from time to time determine the major thesis
or the minor thesis and unit requirements of the degree and the requirements of preliminary candidature
and in relation to these may determine any matter or thing including but not limited to requirements concerning
-
3.2.1 number, timing, content and duration;
3.2.2 in relation to a thesis, form, supervision, submission and distribution;
3.2.3 credit;
3.2.4 assessment;
3.2.5 attendance and participation;
3.2.6 satisfactory progress; and
3.2.7 satisfactory completion.
3.3 The faculty board must cause any determination under this section to
be published in a faculty information handout.
4. Admission to candidature
4.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree, by major thesis, must -
4.1.1 have qualified in the university for a bachelors degree with honours
in a science discipline -
4.1.1.1 HIIA or higher; or
4.1.1.2 below HIIA but with additional research and professional experience;
or
4.1.2 have other qualifications or qualifications and experience deemed
equivalent by the faculty board.
4.2 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree, by minor thesis and units, must -
4.2.1 have qualified in the university for a bachelors degree in a science
discipline; or
4.2.2 have other qualifications deemed equivalent or a satisfactory substitute
by the faculty board.
4.3 Before admitting an applicant to candidature the faculty board must
be satisfied that -
4.3.1 the candidate is suitably prepared for the course of study; and
4.3.2 adequate facilities and supervision are available.
5.Time limits
Subject to these regulations and to any determination of the faculty board
in a particular case, a course of study must be completed in a maximum of five
years.
6. Intermission
The faculty board may, from time to time and subject to any conditions specified,
grant a candidate leave of absence, but for no more than a maximum of twelve
months in total, unless the faculty board in any particular case otherwise determines.
6.A Preliminary candidature
6A.1 An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree by major thesis, who does not satisfy the requirements of subsection 4.1 but satisfies the requirements for admission to candidature for the degree by minor thesis and units, may be admitted to preliminary candidature for the degree by major thesis.
6A.2 The course of study for preliminary candidature –
6A.2.1 comprises a minor thesis and units; and
6A.2.2 must be completed in a maximum of one year full-time or two years part-time.
6A.3 A person who satisfactorily completes the course of study for preliminary
candidature -
6A.3.1 may be admitted to candidature for the degree by major thesis; or
6A.3.2 may elect not to proceed with candidature for the degree, in which event he or she is qualified for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Science.
7. Qualification
A candidature who satisfactorily completes a course of study qualifies for the
award of the degree.
8.Changes in regulations and course of study requirements
8.1 Subject to this section, a candidate must comply with these regulations
and with the relevant course of study requirements determined by the faculty board
under these regulations, as in force or published from time to time.
8.2 Where the faculty board considers that a candidate has, since first
enrolling for a degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in
the regulations or course of study requirements, the faculty board must permit
the candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or course of study
requirements in force or published at some time during candidature, provided the
faculty board is satisfied that the work so required to be completed is equivalent
in standard to that currently required to complete the particular course of study.
