50 years at Monash

Foundation years
Monash University was created by an act of State Parliament in 1958. It was the first new university to be established in Victoria in 106 years.

Our bold vision for the future
Monash University has come a long way in 50 years. We ask Monash leaders, teachers, students and researchers where they think we will be in another half century.

The first graduates
Today they can include up to a thousand students in ceremonies filled with pomp and circumstance, but the first Monash University graduation was for two students and took place in a University office.

50 years of art
Monash University has been collecting contemporary Australian art for most of its 50-year history. Today, the Monash University Museum of Art is as a leading public art museum and custodian of an outstanding collection.
