Research priorities

Monash has identified six priorities addressing the most important 21st century challenges. Research teams that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries examine issues holistically.

Sustainability

Monash confronts the issues limiting a sustainable future by building teams of researchers transcending traditional disciplines. They seek solutions around water supply, climate change, biodiversity, energy and transport.

Peace and security

Global security, regional tourism, refugees and human rights, are some of the most compelling and challenging issues of our generation and ones that Monash researchers are providing solutions for.

Economic development

Monash improves knowledge of emerging ecnonomies, trade and global movements of people by pursuing ideas that use development as a vehicle for change.

Innovation

Innovative research generating new intellectual property is essential in new economies. Monash provides the tools for scientists to harness the potential for new developments.

Health and disease

Solutions to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, circulatory disease and stroke will be found at the cross roads of medicine and technology. Monash leads the quest to preserve the health, happiness and life expectancy of the global community.

Community cohesion

Monash researchers are at the forefront of policy development affecting migration, economic growth and social cohesion. At Monash, the world is our campus. Almost one third of Monash students were born overseas allowing the University to show practical leadership in community building.
