About SCG

The SCG is a membership organisation that provides a forum for the Australian tertiary sector to:

• benchmark its environmental performance
• share information on practical, cost-effective measures to reduce operational environmental impacts, and
• participate in, and promote, further environmental initiatives and programs to improve environmental performance and reputation

SCG was initiated in Victoria in 2006 and is now available nationally to all tertiary education institutions in Australia. It is primarily funded by members and is operated on a cost-recovery basis by Monash Sustainability Institute, Monash University, Melbourne, Victoria.

SCG's main annual activity is the Sector Sustainability Reporting Project, which assesses and compares environmental sustainability performance in the Australian tertiary education sector.

SCG assists its members to collect and report data on their environmental sustainability performance in the previous year using a comprehensive environmental sustainability reporting tool (the SCG Workbook). The Workbook covers current government environmental reporting requirements for universities and TAFEs, as well as other areas of environmental performance relevant to the sector, such as institutional commitment to sustainability, energy use, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, transport use, water use, waste disposal and recycling, green purchasing, building sustainability, information technology (IT) services, social sustainability, and education for sustainability.

The reported data is compiled into the annual SCG Sector Report, which is launched at an annual forum.The resulting Sector Reports make the environmental sustainability performance of participating member institutions publicly available and accessible. Sharing this information creates a constructive climate for positive change in tertiary education.
