Edwina Cornish: "When Monash was created 50 years ago, the vision was that it would be a first class research university, but more than that it would be a university that reached out, a university that engaged with its community and more than that made a difference to Australian industry.

"That was important 50 years ago, that's even more important today

"We don't want the knowledge that we create to be locked up within the university.

"We want to have an effect on the lives of Australians and people around the world. Our research is informed by the challenges that we are facing.

"We work with industry and business to align our research efforts to their challenges.

"One of the great things about Monash is the diversity of our research. So, we're active across a broad range of disciplines and that expertise has application to many, many industries.

"Some of the sectors that Monash works closely with include the automotive industry, the mining sector, the pharmaceutical industry, the services industries.

"Because of the multi-campus nature of Monash, we have the capacity to link up our researchers internationally in a way that no other university can.

"There are many examples of where Monash research has made a difference to the lives of Australians and indeed people across the world.

"Some examples that spring to mind are Monash scientists were pioneers in the development of IVF technology.

"Another very good example of where Monash research has made a difference is our accident research centre, otherwise known as MUARC our Monash University Accident Research Centre.

"It has been around for 20 years and in that period its research has underpinned policies here in Victoria that can be directly correlated to a dramatic reduction to death and trauma as a result of road accidents.

"One of the things that typifies Monash is that we're a young university and that youth pervades the research culture of the institution.

"We're an institution where we're very attractive for young people to come.

"We support them to be highly creative and to undertake research of the highest quality.

"It's a place where young researchers can come and really make their career.

"We support young researchers through the provision of infrastructure, through mentoring and through encouraging them to be the best they can be.

"We're very well placed at our Clayton campus particularly which is at the centre of the major manufacturing hub in Victoria.

"We're co-located with the CSIRO, with the Monash Medical Centre, with the Monash Stem Cell Centre and we have at this campus very modern research infrastructure, including we're next door to the Australia Synchrotron, so we have all of the ingredients to be a real innovation hub.

"Over the last few years we've attracted some extraordinary people to Monash and Monash is becoming very well known around the world as an institution where creative people, people who want to make a difference can come and be supported."
