Higher Degree by Research Student Poster Exhibition and 3-minute thesis competition
The HDR poster exhibition celebrates the depth, breadth and overall contribution students make to research activities and output at Monash.
All current HDR students are invited to submit a poster showcasing their research. This is a great opportunity to profile your work whether or not you have experience in preparing posters.
Students who submit a poster will also be invited to nominate for the 3-minute thesis competition. This involves explaining your research in 3 minutes to an audience of research peers.
Important: you can submit a poster to the exhibition only or submit a poster for the exhibition and nominate for 3-minute thesis.

Outline
Up to 240 posters will be selected for exhibiting. The exhibition opening will be at Clayton campus on Wednesday 19 August 11.30 am - 1.30 pm. This will be followed by exhibitions at all Victorian campuses.
Poster submissions deadline - Friday 17 July
- Your poster will be judged against others in your home faculty. Students based at the Gippsland campus will be judged as a separate cohort
- The Faculty Research Office and Heads of Departments/Schools will select the winners and final submissions for the exhibition
- You will be notified of your poster’s inclusion in the exhibition
- On the submission form you are also invited to nominate for ‘3 minute thesis' (more information below).
3-minute thesis outline
Students are invited to also nominate themselves for the 3-minute thesis competition.
Once all nominations have been received they will be allocated to one of three ‘judging’ groups based on the discipline of their research.
The judging panels (senior academics) will select which students will be invited to ‘pitch’ to the panel. The judging panel may use the submitted posters as well as seeking supervisor recommendations.
Selected students will outline to the panel in three minutes (the use of one PowerPoint slide only will be allowed):
- Why their research is important
- What they have done to address the research question
- What long term outcomes are they anticipating
The panel will select one student from each group who will present their three minute thesis to the audience at the Opening Event.
At the event each presenter will be given a score based on clarity, presentation and engagement with the audience. These scores will be tallied and the 3 students will be announced as first, second and third place winners.
Prizes
There are some great cash prizes on offer for winning posters. These will be awarded at the exhibition opening
- Over twenty cash prizes of $250 will be awarded to the best posters
- Winners will also receive a certificate
- The overall winner of 3 minute thesis will receive $1000 and a trophy, second place $200 and third place $100.

Important notes
- If you have already prepared a poster for conferences or other student exhibitions you can use it as a basis for submission. However you are required to re-format the poster into the template supplied on this site.
- The University will cover the cost of printing the posters.
- Posters will be returned to Faculty Research Offices at the end of the exhibitions
- There is information and tips to help you through the process in the important links above. Your supervisor or head of department/school will also be able to help.
