What is the #GlobalHungerHack?

The #GlobalHungerHack weekend combines two of the most powerful agents of change: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and entrepreneurship. This weekend is an opportunity to generate ideas and reshape them through feedback from experts before putting them to the test in a final pitch.

Why a hacking weekend?

In this light speed innovation-to-impact weekend, you'll experience the fast-tracked process of developing a business, all in the context of using STEM innovations to address one of the world's most prominent issues: global hunger and food security.

Explore the Challenge

STEM and entrepreneurship can play a pivotal role to achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. In line with the second goal, to end hunger and achieve food security, the ideas developed at the #GlobalHungerHack will reshape the way we address the issue with forward-thinking solutions to one of the most persistent global challenges.

Who should attend?

#GlobalHungerHack is open to the STEM and entrepreneurship community, as well as people with an interest in global food security. 

The event is compulsory for second year students in Bachelor of Science Advanced - Global Challenges (Honours) as part of their studies. Students from other GC cohorts are encouraged to attend.

Lyndon started Eat Up in response to a local newspaper article that highlighted local kids who were regularly going hungry at school. Eat Up provides a free lunch to disadvantaged primary school children who would otherwise go without. Since the first delivery in 2013 in Lyndon's hometown of Shepparton, Eat Up has delivered over 13,000 lunches and now supports 20 schools across the state. Eat Up now aims to support hungry kids right around the country. In recognition for his work with Eat Up, Lyndon was named one of the 200 most influential people in the 'for-good' sector by Pro Bono Australia.

FAQ's

Q: Do I need to have an idea before I come?
We really want you to take part. Come along, there will absolutely be a role for you to play in supporting and developing the idea of your team.

Q: Do I need to have formed a team beforehand?
Come ready to form new collaborations. Teams are formed on Friday night based upon the ideas that are presented in the first pitch session.

Q: I know nothing about hunger, food security or the sustainable development goals, is this the right hacking weekend for me?
Do you want to be part of the solution for these issues? If your answer is yes, this is absolutely the right weekend for you! We will send you some material prior to the weekend to help shape your understanding. There will also be world class speakers giving you a brief overview on Friday night.

Q: Do I have to be there all weekend? Can I leave early for work/sport/family/life?
We suggest keeping this weekend free form other activities. As you will see from the schedule, you will be rapidly coming up with a business idea which will require 100% of your commitment. Some groups may decide to work into the night on Saturday. If you have to nip off, have a chat to your team about it.

Q: Is food provided?
If you are asking this question, you must love food. And we love food too particularly food that helps other people. Over the weekend you will be treated to a variety of Melbourne's food social enterprises. Hungry for change?

Q: Do I need to be a software developer to be involved?
Coding and development experience is awesome, but we need people with a broad range of skills. Everybody will have the opportunity to make a contribution.

Q: Who will be attending the weekend?
The people who will be here, are people who want to be part of the solution. We are expecting all sorts of people from a wide range of backgrounds to take part.

Q: I have never taken part in a hacking event, should I come along?
#GlobalHungerHack is a chance for you to bring your ideas to life. During the weekend, you and a team of like minded will have the chance to refine your ideas, gain feedback from industry experts and pitch your ideas. No worries if you have not taken part in a hacking weekend before, we will support you throughout the weekend.

Q: What are the Sustainable Development Goals?
In January 2016, the new UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) came into effect to help guide global, regional and national development priorities for all countries and all people to 2030. The 17 SDGs and 169 targets continue and expand on the work started by the UN's poverty-elimination focussed Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which expired at the end of 2015. Developed over three years through an unprecedented global consultation and negotiation process, the SDGs aim to bring an end to extreme poverty, promote prosperity and well-being for all, protect the environment and address climate change, and encourage good governance and peace and security.

Q: Is there a cost associated with attending the weekend?
There is a small cost of $40, which will contribute to your food costs for the weekend. University students have a reduced cost of $20.
