Centre for Health Economics

The Centre for Health Economics (CHE), Faculty of Business and Economics, has been at the forefront of health economics teaching and research in Australia for more than 13 years.  CHE has one of the largest concentrations of senior health economists in Australia and has a strong track record of health economics research, teaching and community service.  Its overriding goal is to undertake and promote high quality health economics research and teaching activities, with both a national and international focus.

CHE’s achievements include pioneering work on the measurement of social values and health-related quality of life (the Assessment of Quality of Life (AQoL), a major role in the development of policy and practice of economic evaluation of health services through work with the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits and Medical Services Advisory Committees; and development of alternative models of health system financing such as disease-based priority setting models.

CHE is training the next generation of health economists having developed health economics teaching courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels.  It offers the largest teaching program in health economics in Australia including Masters and PhD by research, a comprehensive postgraduate teaching program (aimed at both economists and health professionals) and a new undergraduate subject as part of a Biosciences/Economics degree.
