Faculty contacts

In order to study overseas you must fulfill any specific requirements of your faculty, as well as the university wide requirements described elsewhere on the Monash Abroad website.

Any study you plan to do overseas must be approved in advance by your faculty to ensure that you receive credit towards your Monash degree.

There are exchange advisers in every faculty who can explain your faculty's requirements and help you obtain approval for your overseas study plan for exchanges, intercampus exchanges and study abroad.  The approval process varies between faculties and courses so make sure you talk to your faculty exchange adviser at least 3 months before the Monash Abroad deadline to ensure that you understand what you will need to do.

Once you have completed your Monash Abroad application, including your overseas study plan, you should submit it to your faculty exchange adviser for approval at least 4-6 weeks before the Monash Abroad deadline to make sure it is approved in time.

Faculty exchange advisers can also help you select units to study overseas and, in some cases, can provide lists of overseas units which have been approved before.

Faculty approval for short term international study programs is given by the program coordinators, not the exchange advisers listed below.

Faculty requirements

The Faculty has exchange arrangements with a range of preferred exchange partners throughout the world (see link below) and it is generally easier to obtain faculty approval for an exchange to one of these preferred partners.

  • You cannot apply to go on exchange or intercampus exchange until you have completed 48 credit points of your course and received your results.
  • Credit points earned at Monash College or outside Monash will not normally be counted in the 48 credit points.
  • Approval will only be given to study core units overseas if the content of the overseas unit is 80% identical to the Monash core unit.  It is generally easier to get approval to study electives overseas.
  • Students applying to go to universities in Canada and the USA must enrol in 5 courses (usually 15 credits) in order to receive 24 Monash credit points.
  • You can normally only go overseas on exchange or intercampus exchange in your last semester if you are doing all electives - check with your course coordinator.
  • If you expect to apply for professional accreditation after you have graduated, check with your course coordinator whether your overseas study will be recognised for accreditation purposes.
Study plans
  • Read the faculty policy for exchange/study abroad students before preparing your application (see link below)
  • MBA students must seek advice from the MBA exchange coordinator before preparing your application as there are specific requirements for MBA exchanges.
  • All other students should submit your completed study plan to the exchange adviser on your campus.
  • For every overseas unit in your study plan you must obtain detailed outlinescontaining:
    • weekly breakdown of syllabus
    • prescribed textbooks
    • details of all assessment
    • prerequisites
    • year level
    • credit points (in host university scale)
    • hours of class time
  • If these are not available on the host university website, contact Monash Abroad for assistance.
  • BBusCom students have 8 open electives (one third of their course) that can be taken from any Bus/Eco program and campus, enabling access to intercampus exchange in Malaysia or South Africa.
  • Normal approval time is 4-6 weeks.
